I thought everyone comes back as evil?

When Gus comes back, hes not an evil killing machine. Sure, he kills people but when he's in the house and sitting at the dinner table with drew and jeff, he starts laughing while mashed potatoes are falling out of his mouth.

Why wouldn't he just kill everyone if hes evil? What's with him laughing and walking around and fixing his wound in the bathroom?

Plus, he would just stumble around and wouldn't say a word. Wouldn't people be wondering why Gus was a mumbling zombie walking around like a clumsy fool?

Drew's mom acts like Gus is perfectly normal when he's sitting at the dinner table. Did Gus always just sit at the table making strange noises with mashed potatoes falling out of his mouth?

Drew's mom didn't say anything because she was afraid of him. After all, he did rape her the night before. I always thought Gus was waiting for the right moment to murder his family. Then, he would replace them with Renee and a zombified "son"(Clyde).

In the original book. The people come back as zombies, and usually murdering zombies. But the pets don't come back evil, just kinda dumb and slow- like Gus. Maybe that was the angle they were playing?

The resurrected aren't zombies, they don't eat others.

They are dead corpses possessed by demons or evil spirits and come back as demons.

They don't come back 'evil' per say they just come back 'wrong'.

You are correct. In the original story the only other person buried up there came back messed up, but not murderous. It is implied that it depends on the situation and the spirit that possesses the body. The spirit that possessed Gage it's inferred influenced the situation around Gage's death so it could come back. I think it was the same demon that Jud Crandal encounters after WWII with the Baterman family (seen in flashback).

And do you think it was the Wendigo demon that soured the ground along time ago possessed Gage, Timmy, Rachel and Gus?

He was evil, he just didn't feel like killing anyone yet. Just because he put it off for a while doesn't make him good.

It seemed to me that when they were resurrected, hints of their past personality slowly drained out of them. I say this because Zowie protected Drew from Gus (which is when Zowie kills Gus). I think it's kind of like a slow-demon takeover. As for the food thing...idk. I mean, everyone was acting crazy. Chalk it up to poor writing or the graveyard making everyone nuts.
