What was the deal with the Irish detective who rode along with Sean Miller in the police van?
I really didn't understand the true nature of this character. Early on, it is established that although he does not agree with the violent nature of Miller and his crimes, he certainly understands the feelings and reasons that Miller has for carrying out the crimes.
The part that confuses me is in the scene where the detective enters the police van and gives Miller a cop of coffee and then gives him a brutal shit eating grin and laughs in a heavily maniacal fashion. Soon after, he starts to open up to Miller and mentions how he understands his anger and tries to get him to give him names.
Was this guy actually genuine about his empathy as a fellow Irishman or was he trying to manipulate Miller into talking? The maniacal laughter and grin he gives Miller in this scene really makes him seem like he doesn't give a shit
