Delvecchio mentioned in Saving Private Ryan?

For those of you who have seen this AND Saving Private Ryan, was there some kind of an inside joke in Saving Private Ryan in the church when Tom Hanks and Tom Sizemore are talking about one of the privates. Tom Hanks asks what his name was and Tom Sizemore says Delvecchio and they start laughing and talk about him doing stupid things and peein a "V" in the snow for vecchio. Delvecchio is just an uncommon name and I found it odd that this name was used in a scene with Tom Sizemore in Saving Private Ryan.

In "Saving Private Ryan" the name was Vecchio, not Delvecchio.

"Say hello to my little friend!"

And Delvecchio is a very common Italian name.

The only Delvecchio I know of in real life is Alex Delvecchio, a former Detroit Red Wings hockey player.

Also the name of the detective in Due South (David Marciano), who was also in the Shield.
