Get Your Hand Outta My Pocket!

Did that actually happen? Both times? Someone said, "Get Your Hand Outta My Pocket!".

If I've never seen it before, it's a new release to me!

Was wondering the same thing.

Yes, it did happen. There is real footage of him making his speech and you can hear someone say "Get your hand out my pocket! " and then you hear gunshots!

You can check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCMivqYrZxQ

Do you have any thoughts as to why it was said twice? I am watching it now and the first time it is said was during the press conference after Malcolm's trip to Mecca. Was this a possible first assassination attempt?

reply

It was probably said to served as a warning and obviously a disractor.

reply

Malcolm probably knows the true meaning of that phrase when it's shouted by FOI. If Malcolm didn't know that his time was short, he certainly knew when he heard those words.

reply

Well according to something that I read yes, it did happen & it was sent as a warning.

Thanks for the answer and link, CreoleSoul.

I think the implication was that the first time (the press conference at the airport) was a failed assassination attempt -- the shooters decided there were too many media people around and they would almost certainly be instantly identified if they took a shot at Malcolm in such a wide open public place.

The Audobon Ballroom was not exactly a secluded spot and there were hundreds of witnesses, but the shooters succeeded in creating enough chaos and panic among the crowd they did have some chance to get away.

The first time was thought to be a trial run.... to see how people in attendance would respond.

reply

It was said in order to get people attention away from the actual three shooters seated in the front. It was said to start a commotion. In fact, the person who said it added a racist expletive at the end of the sentence.

^^This. It was a dry run to see what type of response they would get.

Oh I thought it was to remind malcom not to take the money from former NOI supporters and thus stealing the money out of their pockets. Would make the motive mainly financial (which isn't unlikely considering the sleazy origins of NOI) instead of fundamentalist.
