821 the number

when malcolm played 821 and it came out, and archie was saying he didn't play it, What was this scene? was it showing that he almost got killed for telling the truth? he should have kept his mouth shut?

West Indian Archie began using cocaine, which affected his memory. Although Malcolm did have the right number it was a matter of reputation. Remember " A man lives by his rep." Archie was known as a big time number runner with a perfect memory by filing numbers in his head.
After watching the scene again and doing some deep thinking, If word got out that Archie was slipping would mean that he would lose (business) or customers. That would lead to people second guessing ie.. "How many other numbers has Archie gotten wrong?" Loss of reputation means a loss of customers. Not to mention the fact that customers would only run to another numbers runner, doing damage to his reputation. Man lives by his rep right?

While Archie was hittin the pipe, I got the exact opposite. I got the impression that Malcolm only tried to call his bluff because he felt Archie was slippin. Remember Archie's goon said that he had been with Archie for 22 years and he had never missed a number. He went on to say that the first thing Archie was gonna do was go back to the booky and conduct an audit. If they found Malcolm to be lying, he was a dead man.

Fast forward to when Archie rolled up on Malcolm. He went on to advise Malcolm that he found out that he was lying and that they needed to step outside. Malcolm NEVER refuted this, instead he offered to pay back the money which he obviously didn't have. When Malcolm attempted to bluff his way out "you know I'm packing", Archie advised him to take his chances because three guns were trained on him.

The offer to pay the money back, Archies statement that Malcolm lied and the sheer look of terror all pointed to one thing; the number 821 didn't hit.
I also used an inflation calculator to determine how much $600 was in 1945 and it comes to $7,973. Malcolm was living way beyond his means which is why he tried to bluff the $600 from Archie.

No, I remember watching it, it did in fact hit!, because what archie says to him isn't that it didn't come out, he said Malcolm didn't play it. Watch it again, I may be wrong, I will watch that part over as well, but I don't think it was to show us malcolms lifestyle, but the fact that the people that "cared" for him can turn on him flip of a coin.

Did you miss the part where I said that Archie approached Malcolm, scolded him about having his back to the door and then went on to say that Malcolm was lying? The point being, Malcolm never refuted that he was indeed lying. That is why he offered to pay the money back to Archie who in turn refused his offer.

reply

No I know what you are saying, but i'm saying I think it did hit, because archie never says it didn't come out he says that Malcolm didn't play it. As far as Malcolm not refuting it, I think he was just thinking what's the point, he knows he was in a lose/lose.

reply

Archie- "You know what? You're a damn liar and so is she. So you figure you take me, you bastard? Well I'm taking you."

Here you go.

I just watched the movie and 821 did hit and Malcolm did call it while they were partying together.
Archie forgot (was high) and couldn't accept he was wrong.

reply

Nope, the number hit.

Also, Malcolm played the numbers directly with Archie as they were both partying, and Malcolm played every combo of 8-2-1.

Since Archie took the bet directly from Malcolm, and as he bragged "never wrote anything down", there was nothing he could go back and verify...either he remembered and believed him....or he did not.

And Malcolm did refute the fact he was lying, when he repeatedly insisted the number hit...but of course per above, he also knew if Archie disputed this, then he too had no way of proving it.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

How do we know that the number hit? There is never a scene where you see the Archie confirming or denying if 821 hit or not. The only thing we have to go by is Archie's word. There simply is not enough information given in the film to confirm who was in the right and who was in the wrong.

The number hit! West Indian Archie's argument wasn't that it didn't hit. In the bar, Archie accused Malcolm of not betting on 821 (which he absolutely did). Towards the end of the movie, Archie asked if Malcolm really bet 821 (meaning the number hit but he was again questioning whether or not Malcolm had the bet). It may have not been true in real life, but just based on the fictitious representation in the film, Archie was willing to kill Malcolm, not because he lied, but to defend his reputation.

What you guys are forgetting is that Malcolm is telling the story, it's from Malcolm's point of view.
So of course he thinks he hit the number. My guess is that Archie was right and Malcolm remembered wrong.

Watching the movie now and the scene is described as if Malcolm didn't play 821 but, he did while they were hanging out. That drug had his boss slipping. That's why throughout the film when Malcolm links up with him, the writer clearly has this guy bragging about his "great memory". He's telling Malcolm not to write his clients numbers down due to the paper trail it can leave(legal reasons) and how he should be like him... But, we got to see him completely mess up on his memory while under the influence of the so called man's drug...hint hint...Malcolm also felt blessed for the incident. He would've never become a Muslim and turned his life around if it hadn't been for that memory loss. He definitely payed to play 821. His boss was just wasted and forgot to put his numbers in. Somewhat, bitter sweet.
