I have been watching some old NOI sermons online and am surprised that they still have this man's picture in a big frame. Like he is their version of Jesus. Surprised that Elijah's son let Farrakhan take control. He was bumped down by Wallace Mohammed.

Elijah's Muhammad's son Wallace aka Warith actually radically restructured things to be in line with traditional Sunni islam.
Not everyone was happy with that. So Louis Farrakhan resurrected the old NOI ways.
I agree that the NOI is *beep* up, but Jim Jones & David Koresh is going too far. Elijah Muhammad was clearly in it for his own glorification, like lots of Christian preachers - but no one says Tammy Faye Baker or Jimmy Swaggert were Jim Jones. And, of course, the NOI had a perverted racist message, saying that white people were created by a mad scientist and all kinds of wacky stuff.
But, they did do some positive things teaching self-responsibility, honesty, morality and got some people on a better track in prisons. I think they were kind of an understandable product of the racism they'd experienced. But, yeah, when Malcolm X evolved beyond their limitations, they killed him.

This is what happens in organized religion. Humans are fallible. And when you give people power and money within any organization, they are corruptible.
shareCharlatan or not, you have to admit he improved the lives of many black men in America, and helped increase the focus on the social injustice. And....he helped Malcolm X find himself, without which he may have just faded further into the prison system.
Yes, there was graft and other legal/spiritual issues. But overall, the NOI was a beacon for many to improve both their lives and self image.
My take is that he was a man who did lot of good with good intentions but slowly became corrupted over time by succumbing to his deification. Malcolm X eventually woke up to this reality.
