Did anyone cry?

Did anyone else cry at this film? I think it may have been the first film I cried at!

reply

I get choked up at the telegram scene.

Why do people get so worked up at that scene? I always thought that was so melodramatic, over-the-top/overwrought and manipulative. Also, why should I get so worked up over a character that we've ever actually seen and presumably, knew the risk going in over being in war (therefore it wasn't like it was a hapless accident)? It's like Penny Marshall just when you get right down to it, wanted to give her daughter at least one big showcase in the movie.

Yeah I also don't get why so many people found that scene sad. It's not like any of the main characters died, or any character that you even see in the entire movie (in that scene).

But I did find the ending sad. Especially with the fact that Dottie left the league after one season and lost contact with everyone, including Kit. It just seems sad to see everyone in their old age and that some of them had died. It's like we never got to truly see their glory years. And that Madonna song at the end did it for me as well.

To say that it's supposed to be ending on a good note, I just found it very sad.

I know that this is going sound callous, but it's extremely naive on Betty's part to not in the back of her mind, think that her husband might die any day he's in battle. So you shouldn't (while you none the less, should be able to grieve and feel said) that shocked or surprised.

reply

I get you said this 7 years ago, but this is a pretty horrible take.

People's loved ones go off to war all the time, and being aware of their danger doesn't magically make it less difficult when somebody comes to tell them their loved one was killed. That's their worst nightmare coming true.

Also...sure, it was a fictional character's grief of a not-shown character's death. But you don't have to be a genius to realize that a movie character's experiences are stand-ins for real human experiences. Getting notified of a loved-ones death is something real and everyone can relate to.

Not only did you sound callous, but you absolutely were callous.

I cry every time I watch it. At various parts of the movie. I think even my dad tears up.. we saw this at the movie theater when it came out.

yeah, I'm a guy, and I get pretty emotional during certain scenes; this film has a great story, and a lot of heart.

reply

Yeah the telegram scene gets me.
This is a wonderful movie with a moving story and inspiring acting.

I love this movie, but, the telegram scene actually spoils it for me as it wouldn't have happened that way, telegram deliverers would have been trained to be far more tactful, do you really think one would have stood there and said what he did? I know it was meant for effect and it obviously works for some of you, but, I cringe when I see it, it could have been done much better and still had the same effect.

Life isn't a rehearsal, so make this one your best performance

Nurses and Doctors are also trained to be tactful and while most of them are there are some that are just as insensitive as the Western Union man in this.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

I've seen this film a million times and have never got emotional before, but I watched it again today for the first time in years and the telegram scene totally got me!

The telegram guy was a bit over the top, but I can believe there are jerks out there in every form.

Honestly, it was done to make sure that Jimmy was the one to give Betty the telegram and then comfort her. I think it was meant to redeem him for their first encounter, where he tears up the baseball card of her husband's the first time she meets him. He ruins a physical reminder of her husband, but then is able to comfort her and give genuine sympathy after he passes.

Going by what I just read on Reddit...:

My favorite is when Jimmy pushes the mailman out the door when he's fumbling around with a letter from the War Department. Shows he has really come to care about his team.

That was such a good scene. You could really feel the dread coming from the married women.

Every now and then someone on this subreddit asks what's a scene that makes you cry every time. I never remember this scene when I see that question. But holy crap, this scene. Gets me good every time.

For some reason, I get really emotional during this movie. I tear up at the telegram scene, but I also get happy tears when Kit is waving to the crowd at the end of the last game, and again when Kit and Dottie say goodbye, and again at the very end when the picture of the old people fades into the picture of them as young baseball players, and then fades to the black screen with the dedication. I think the music was a big part of it - the score was brilliant and so moving.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I always tear up when Betty finds out her husband dies and then I start up again when Racine wins and I pretty much don't stop crying until the movie ends!

reply

I thought I was the only one who cried at this movie. Ive seen it so many times and I cry each time. The ending gets me, cause they make it seem like Dottie and Kit havent seen each other since that last game...
