What brought the murder on?

In the real life story, why did her two friends kill her? Any reason?

Her friends were jealous because Michelle was getting all the attention from the boys at school and she was very pretty.

Actually in the movie it the real reason for the
murder was Ellen envied Jenny' and her relationship
with her mother.And even made Jenny's mom belive
she was there to help her when in reality she only
meant to help herself to take Jenny's place as her
daughter.But there are no honor among thieves as in
the end she turn on the friend that helped her kill
Jenny.She was even gonna leave her own little girl
Celeste behind.That;s the kind of selfish person she
was.At least in this movie version.What the real story
is I don't know.But I hope if it's like the movie that
those two girls stay in prison at least until they
are well into their late forties.

Actually, in the movie, a third friend that was there but did not participate in the murder turned the two that killed Jenny in.

At least she did right by Jenny in the end and
finally help nab the two killers.

Jenny trusted Ellen and Carla because they were her best friends and her mother, Jean trusted them too but regrets that now because they killed Jenny and they deserved to be punished.

there was a third friend in real life as well. She wanted to come forward but was so fearful of the two girls. Her brother ended up killing himself and the grief for him as well as Jenni ( Missy) made her come forward.

Having read the novel & seen the film, I am still shocked that the family ever allowed Ellen to stay in the house once they realized her personality.

Long before they knew she was the killer, she showed more red flags than China.
The statement she made when she said she had an abortion: "I killed Steve's baby..." and she smiled very happily...that would have been enough for me to kick her out for good!

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

I don't remember that part of the book. But then again, i ended up skipping a lot of pages.
