on Oprah
Doubt anyone knows anything about this but I'll give it a try. I read some info on this story and it was on Oprah. The real Avila family. I was wondering if anyone had seen this episode of Oprah?

shareI happened to be home when the episode on Oprah appeared. The Avila family was just sniping at Karen Severson.
Sadly, I was researching this case (it's on Lifetime right now) and this is so depressing:

Karen Severin was released December 9, 2011
So the Los Angeles Daily News finally did a story on the release of Karen Severson. They conducted the interview with Missy Avila's brother Chris Avila. Karen quietly left prison on Friday without much fanfare. She is apparently spending some transitional time at a group home in Pomona County, Claremont, California, according to prison officials. People are shocked, outraged, and saddened by the news. I have received about 20 emails since we made the announcement on our website earlier this week regarding her upcoming release. Karen Severson was considered a model prisoner by all accounts. She had many people, including prison staff, and several of the women that she mentored, fighting for her release. Karen Francis Severson received a B.A in psychology and a Doctorate degree in theology during her incarceration.(wow! a doctorate...really....while in prison?)
Whatever happened to the Damn Death Penalty?
I worked at a major university for many years, and would suggest that earning a bachelor's, but, more importantly, a doctorate while in prison isn't as grueling and challenging as it is "outside." Teaching such classes isn't something most academics would want on their curriculum vitae.
(I apologize to anyone I may have offended by my broad generalization.)
