So after the end... (spoilers)
People trash this movie all the time-- and it's mostly pretty well-deserved-- but I think it is underrated in its unabashed cynicism. I have seen few movies that have presented such a grim view of the future as this one. Everything is so bad in this futuristic dystopia that it affects the individual level: there is no decency, no common humanity, and everyone is out to get each other.
With all that in mind, what will happen now that Alex has the McCandless fortune, company and power? Will he use all this to make a better world, or will he just live in the lap of luxury, possibly moving from body to body for as long as he can? He seems to be willing to do the latter, as he seems to imply to Julie after he is exposed by Vacendak if they can continue to playact. Either way, I felt a sense of hopelessness at the end of the film. Furlong gets away with everything, but what's the point?
