tragedy, I hope one day the social convention can be changed

Can the desire of a man just be uncontrollable? Even he made up his mind but suddenly beaten by the blue,pityful girl(I just can't accept Jullite's role in this flick after seeing an innocent woman in blue and Chacolat)Is it just animal instinct?

It's such a pity that death can be caused by people's attitude toward sexual behavior. Anna shouldn't be blamed for her painful childhood, which was a great mental damage, though it is so uncomfortable to see Anna just kept eliciting the father.

Anyway, it is a big tragedy. I just hope one day people can treat sexual behavior the same as having meals.It's just nothing uncommon.Given it won't cause any disease. Then maybe Anna can find her treatment for her mental damage without hurting anyone. So there'll be less tragedy.

There are so much tragedy just caused by social conventions. Especially when one guy meets with the great social powers. I doubt if it is good for human development.

Treating sex the same as "having meals" is exactly the kind of stupidity that causes the sexually transmitted diseases and very often AIDS that kill people. And let's not forget the fact that food is essential to survival. Sex, while considered essential to the average person, is not vital to survival for anyone on earth. Furthermore, if anyone is at a point in their life where they are making decisions on whether or not to have sex with someone with the same sincerity as they would on deciding whether to go to Wendy's or Burger King for lunch, then the idiot deserves whatever diseases they get.

"Damage" is only partly about animal instinct. And that's on a very surface level. Anna knew exactly what she was doing, and she had a good idea that it would end in tragedy. She chooses to relive her past horror, and that is what causes her pain and inability to move beyond it. She is damaged and true to her character she must relive the situation...

Was it her hope to live it again and change the final outcome? That remains one of the mysteries of her character. But what is known is that she sought out a young man who shared a startling resemblence with her dead brother, and she engaged in an affair with his father...much in the same way her brother suspected her with the other friend. Self-destructive people repeat themselves and when the level of intensity is so great as it is here, it is almost impossible for them to not do damage to everyone around them. As Jeremy Irons and Miranda Richardson (who should have won her oscar for this) learn the hard way.

Very well written.

And yes it is very hard to walk away from a relationship that encompasses a very strong physical attractiong coupled with intense sexual relationship. Even after one finds out that her lover is in a closed relationship of 9 mos., or however long, when upon meeting him, he told you nothing about it and in the same breath told you he's going to be open and honest about all of his relationships he's presently in. Yes I took the high road and left after he told me and before our 4th time getting together. It was very hard, but I did it, because I couldn't do that to her, even though I didn't even know her!

Sex is not essential for survival?. Well,survival for what?.Does mere survival make one happy?. (Perhaps at first place we have to agree here on what counts as survival.)

Are you sure about this? While I wouldn't agree with the wording (one could infer this to imply irresponsibility), it's generally in more sexually-repressed countries (more religious countries, i.e.) that we have the greatest outbreaks of sexually-transmitted diseases. Perhaps one of the reasons is because condoms are generally banned by their religious institutions and the idea that everyone should have sex only with their spouses generally doesn't work, even among the most religiously devout. These belief systems often don't provide a plan B in case one does engage in extramarital sex. This is especially the case in third world countries with strong religious influence: nothing promotes the spread of STDs more than the combination of poverty and religion.

Countries that treat sex more casually (ex: Sweden) tend to have fewer problems with outbreaks and also seem to have healthier marriages (fewer cases of divorce and infidelity). Perhaps one of the reasons for this is that marriage is understood as a life-long devotion to someone and not just a way to have sex with them.

What are you yapping about? The thing that caused the son's death had only a fluky relation to sexual behavior; rather, the cause first and foremost had to do with the humans' founding idea of family as a circle of trust. It is one of the humans' first unwritten contracts. Stephen tossed that contract to the wind when he decided to betray his son in one of the most abhorrent ways a father can ever betray the scion.

When Martyn put his hand on that doorknob, what he had prepared himself for was a face-off with the intruding male — his competitor and adversary. But, when he opened the door, he was faced with something that not only could he not imagine, but couldn't even comprehend. The malevolent being forcing itself onto Martyn's other half and, in effect, screwing Martyn was but that one who had ever only been the very haven of trust, the very monolith of aid and the never-ever doubted, unconditionally dedicated Friend-forever: dad. Martyn had no means to process what his eyes saw. His shock was pure and complete. That, coupled with the fairly sudden previous realization that the woman he loved and the relationship for which he put his hopes up didn't actually exist, but rather that the grandpa's big achiever was only somebody's stooge, made him want to escape the what appeared to have been but some wicked, twisted semblance of reality. He subconsciously stepped back, — his eyes still glued to the scape the mind couldn't wrap itself around, — then made another step, and then the next one was — one too many.

So, that's what killed Martyn.
