after watching this over and over again...

I loved this movie the first couple times I watched it. Then when I watched it with some certain people they started to point out ridiculous *beep* I have never felt so awkward in my life then when the cheesy porno scene starts.

And what is with the weird old guy? He doesn't fit in at all. He just makes random comments when Felix is acting like an *beep*

I really didn't understand the overdramatized scene with the hand-slapping game. Was it to make Jeff look like the biggest pussy in the world? or was it supposed to be intentionally stupid. The only way to describe this movie is Awkward!!!

No "genius"---the movie is actually a very good film with deep issues that have been strangely and tragically overlooked. The movie is very underrated and that's a shame.

"Gopher" (the weird old guy) is probably an old associate of Felix's, and as the movie implies later when he's working for John and David, he's good for finding out information and getting things. Felix, probably, considers him a servant/crime associate/old friend. Go figure.

The hand-slapping contest between Felix and David (a common child's game among older and more aggressive boys)was played in order to:

1. Embarrass David in front of John and show just how weak and unsuited for the criminal life he was. David's later actions were actually an "acting out" to make up for this social/existential disrespect.

2. Establish Felix as the dominate animal at the top of the food chain of this particular criminal enterprise, and to establish the fact that Felix has always thought that David was a weak link and a worthless person due to his lack of predatory aggressiveness.

3. Establish that Felix has no respect even for David's very LIFE. Injuring David's hands is a subtle message that he plans to kill David in order to replace him with a more worthy criminal associate: John (Felix not knowing that John is actually an undercover cop).

A little intelligence when watching a film goes a long way.

for some reason i doubt real criminals and drug traffickers *beep* around playing hand slapping games. if you really think that *beep* would play out like that in real life you're a moron, in addition to being a douchebag (if that oh-so-intelligent post of yours is any indication). kill yourself.

Well, veild threats aside . . . . Sort of.

Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular.

imdeanlabouty real criminals and drug traffickers are about doing stupid crap trying to put people down. don't feel bad because you stupid ass got put in check and proved your a retard that can't watch a movie unless every detail is spoon fed to you. so go back to your fiddy cent gangsta movie, cause that's probably more your taste.

Damn dude,I normally don't go to forums and just happenned to be in this one.Deep Cover is one of my favorite movies of all time.So I'm checking people's comments and I get to one that tells you to go kill yourself and calls you a douchebag. Now granted, that's none of my business. But that's messed up.As an outsider who doesn't know either one of you posters, one thing became totally obvious:that dude was pissed 'cause you got him.Nailed 'em.Now I can guarantee that that guy is gonna fire back at me and make some kinda stupid fuc-in' comment. But the fact is your analysis was well thought out and on target.I've seen Deep Cover like 25 times or something. So there's my two cents.Maybe someone can get back to talkin' about the movie?Or not.Who really gives a crap?

Well the guy was just saying the hand slapping part was random when he watched the movie. It was a wtf moment for him. He didn't even insult the film. He was just talking about his experience watching it.

Then Phenomenal Graffiti had a post that was a really good spot-on analysis. But he RUINED it by acting superior and insulting the person's intelligence, even though they didn't even do anything. It was unjustified.

So the dude replied in kind. It wasn't because of the analysis. It was because Mr. Graffiti decided to be a douchenozzle.

I just watched the movie again after a break of about 10 years, and still loved it.

The hand slapping scene was good in a few ways.

Barbosa was clearly furious as he knew Jason and John were trying to cut him out of the frame and take his job as supplier (and in that business that means he could very well get killed).

As 20KG of Coke they asked for was way too much, they normally struggle to sell anywhere close to 2KG (Barbosa even said that to Gopher when Gopher was asking him to go out and apologise to Jason afterwards).

So he believed it was Jason trying stuff on as John was the new guy (when it was actually the other way around and John suggesting it), so he could not just attack Jason for no reason, so instead he came up with the hand slapping game (which as you say is a innocent child's game), but if you also notice he was hitting him across the face when he flinched, and then he broke his hand punching it full on; this is obviously not part of that game and so the game was just an excuse to allow him to do that.

(And also for the guy who thought the hand slapping was too immature for real "gangsters", have you posted the same about half of Joe Pesci's crazy stuff in the Goodfellas forum?)

the hand slapping scene was stupid and unrealistic. It doesnt hurt that much to play that game, Goldblum was overacting and the cheesy sound affects they put in to make it sound like it hurts way more than it does were, well, cheesy.

plus, it's real easy to "read" when the other person is going to slap your hands and just move them out of the way. Anyone who's every played this game knows that. Either Jeff Goldblums character had really poor reflexes or Barbosa had super-human speed.

edit: and another thing; in the real criminal world, you don't ever let your enemy know that you disrespect them and you want to kill them. You smile in their face and then kill them when they aren't expecting it. If you want to know how it's really done, watch the Soprano's.

Damn right for anyone reading this, I agree 100% and would have said the same basic thing - it's about power, this kind of game.
Also, this film IS SO UNDER-RATED. Probably because the powers that be wouldn't help promote such a real story. This IS the real story of the war on drugs, not just "the ugly side of the war on drugs", the WHOLE of the war on drugs is ugly, and WRONG. Get it? This film helps people get it - which is especially important in the face of government/puritan/political propaganda to hide the truth.
Even the rap song for the soundtrack is a classic and the opposite of pop, unlike a typical film today, where it's "let's ride the gravy train." The early 90s was a pretty creative time - was the quality of drugs in the USA higher or something back then?!

First off I have to say that criminals play childish games all the time: look to gang members "slap boxing"

Second, this scene set up what was to come later and you can hear this when Fishburne's character said that he knew that Felix was going to kill David if they didn't kill him first.

I would like to know what else your friends had to say, but this scene isn't a bad one at all.
