Hey all! I sure hope IMDb don't mind this, but I beleive Deep Cover (among many, many others) is a very underrated and overlooked Movie.
And so, I have created my own little 'website' called 'PREDATOR 2 ROCKS !!' (Predator 2 being another of the Underrated) for people to join (for FREE!) so we can discuss all the movies we think desrve MORE credit then they have been given (and this does not necessarily mean 'cult' movies)
Includes the 50 UNDER/OVERrated, Overlooked Gems + lots, lots more!

I think this movie is somewhat under-rated, but it does have its flaws. I suppose the main problem is that it hasn't aged as well. It's an interesting combination of two sub-genres, the "gangsta/hood" and "corrupt/crazy cop" genres. That's about it. Performances are aiight at best, but Goldblum was a bit over-the-top and didn't come off well. Frankly, I think this film has since been eclipsed by movies such "Gang-Related", which is a better take on the themes this film covers.
For me, the best thing about this movie was the music, most significantly, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's classic hit single "Deep Cover". Compare this movie's soundtrack to that of, say, "Colors", and you can see how hip-hop made its transition from old-school party music to hardcore gangsta rap.
Funny, I agree completely but have a slightly different conclusion. I would like to think that my final assessment of a film would relate to how much I enjoy it but this isnt the case. There are a great many flaws in this and yet I can watch it over and over. Perhaps this is style over substance but even just having it play in the background is enjoyable. The narration, the conversations, the sets, the strong use of color, the soundtrack (definitely), all this adds to an enjoyable thing to have playing on the tube while doing something else.
One of my all time favorite movies in spite of its many problems.
Having just watched this film on the basis that Fishburne was in it (not a big fan of goldblum) i have to say it was excellent - far better that i thought it was going to be.
Some of the characters were a bit odd - the local 'boss' is a spectacled geek who should have presumably been shot some time ago & its hard to believe he could rise to such a position - and as for his sidekick !!!!
The 'god-fearing' detective was also a bit odd - do such folk exist? & he stretched it a bit with his interruption of the final 'big' deal.
Overall though it was good & the film worked well. Would recommend it & give it 8/10.
Seriously, I just made a post about this but chances are no-one will really read it but this movie is wayyyyyyyyy better if you watch it in black and white. The directing and lighting look so much better... so much crisper, I kid you not. Try it.
You are absolutely right. It was an underrated film, and great, focused performance by Laurence Fishburne, and Jeff Goldblum. Probably Goldblum's best performance, along with the Fly and Igby Goes Down. Ill be sure to look up underrated films and throw you a quick top 10 underrated 1. Targets (Peter Bogdanovich) 2. The Stuntman (Richard Rush) 3. The Deep End (with Tilda Swinton) 4. The Ox-Bow Incident (William Wellman) 5. Three Kings (David O. Russell) 6. Wrong is Right (Richard Brooks) 7. Over the Edge (Richard Kaplan) 8. Baxter (Jeroime Boivin)(french w/Subtitles) 9. Bullet in the Head (John Woo) 10. Photographing Fairies (Nick Willing)
I definantly agree that Deep Cover is one of the most underrated films out there. As far as a top 10 list, here they are in no order:
Deep Cover Ong Bak Bullet in the head The Stoned Age Juice Memento Pump up the Volume The Virgin Suicides Three O'clock High My Bodyguard
This is off the top of my head, and most of these are not as artistic or as deep as deep cover, but they are some of my favorite films that I don't think many others have heard of.
Definately one of the great straight-to-video movies of the past 20 years(U.K). While it certainly has it's flaws, and it's style heavy, Deep Cover is an exellent urban thriller. The things that stand out are the two leads, along with a genuinely cool black cinema soundtrack. For me, the thing that stands out is the unique HIP HOP editing style employed, that had a huge impact on me, even to this day. The montage of scenes showing Fishburne drug dealing, getting out the car and the jump cuts on Goldblum is an amazing thing to watch....real impact cutting. As for the acting, the best scene is when Russell snorts his first line charlie, despite his beliefs. This scene feels totally realistic and the look in Fishburnes eyes (glazed over), is a stunningly acted and subtle scene. The music again is extermely well placed, and achieves what few can....get the audience in the characters head.

I like your "Criminally Overrated" list; so goddamn true! I liked the Lord of the Rings well enough, but as I grew up with Star Wars, it didn't reach those heights. (The new Star Wars films are unspeakable horrors, of course) I would like to add A Beautiful Mind and any Best Picture Oscar winner except Amadeus.
Thanks. These picks are just the no-brainers i'd like to see brought way down the list of alleged CINEMATIC ACHIEVEMENT....although I'm sure you rolled yer eyes a few times at my underrated list. As a real movie fan, and not some poncey...ignorant critic, I think it's far more worthwhile identifying and praising films that are under appreciated, especially well made genre films.
As for LOTR, I can't believe anyone has enjoyed 30 mins of these joyless, self-serious wank-fests. I also grew up on the Star Wars trilogy, and am still a fan to this day...though not some fanatical true believer. I have wasted hours doing things, that, perhaps would have been better spent doing somthing else, but I know one thing - I've never sat through all 9-10 mindnumbing hours of Tolkien/Jackson's trilogy. I'd rather watch proper popcorn films, that don't have a terminal ART PICTURE complex.
Don't get me started on the Academy...Though some day I will add my two cents.
Is this movie really under rated? I don't think so..but I do believe that it has been forgotten and I personally like the hood meets mafia type of story that it contains. There were some flaws in the movie(but again considering the budget), but I enjoyed seeing Goldblum and Fishburne interaction between each other and for those who have never heard of Goldblum and Fishburne before Jurassic Park and the Matrix; the movie displays these actors versatilty. It obviously cannot compete with a Godfather or Casino type of gangster flick, but then I don't think the director was really going in that type of approach and viewers shouldn't view this flick with that type of mentallity. Overall, anyone who digs gangster movies are gonna like this one..and for the hip hoppers out there, see what song MADE Snoop Doggy Dogg.
I wouldn't say it's terribly underrated because it has a 6.6 on IMDB. I would probably give it a 7. I loved this movie when I was growing up but not as much now that I'm older. I still like it though and it seems to have a lot of fans.
I also think this movie is way Under-rated. I was lucky enough to see this movie when it was released in 1992,back then i went to see almost anything at the cinema. I bought the region 2 dvd from Play, com about 3 months ago for £5.99,and was as enjoyable as i had remembered.
