Kate's mother

Was Kate's mother supposed to have been an alcoholic or maybe killed by a drunk driver? Is that why she reponds with that cryptic comment "I don't expect you would understand", when Doug can't believe she's never had a drink. I couldn't help but think they left some stuff on the cutting room floor that would have fleshed this plot point out some more.

Interesting thought. Jack Moseley, during the scene where he meets Doug after the tryout, explains that Kate grew up without a mother so she died young. Later in the movie, Kate drinks a lot of tequila (she is so cute in that scene) so that may contradict the drunk driver thought. I wonder what happened to Kate's mom?

Very possible she died of an illness or accident

Just my thoughts on the matter, and I could be wrong in what I took from that part of the movie; but figure skating is a very intensive sport, requiring a lot of personal sacrifices of time and money, as well as a controlled lifestyle. Unlike Doug, I'm guessing that Kate (by comparison) probably didn't have a lot of opportunities for attending parties and socializing. Social drinking (much less getting buzzed or drunk) would've been contrary to her goals, inasmuch as alcohol represents empty calories that contribute nothing nutritionally to a body-in-training and can negatively impact one's physical conditioning. Her replying, "I don't expect you would understand" was a subtle way of suggesting that Doug lacked personal self-discipline in his own lifestyle choices.
