Something that has always annoyed me...

I realize that Kate's a bitch. But Doug fell for her anyway. So when she breaks it off with her fiance and asks for a chance he just blows her off and sleeps with another chick, and then gets mad at her?! She's the bad guy?

And I realize it all works out in the end and it's great, but that just irks the crap out of me.

Brother! I have been rehymenated and The Dude will not abide!

reply

errr. Seems like you missed a part of the movie!
She didn't ask for a chance.
She wanted to go to bed with him while completely drunk.
Then she threw him out of her room.

Also, Doug didn't go looking for another chick. One just happened to knock at his door.

reply

no, i didn't miss part of the movie. she was basically throwing herself at him and he no dealed her, then went and slept with another chick. that was just incredibly rude, imo.

OK. Let's try again
she was basically throwing herself at him

correct. You got that right.

and he no dealed her

You got that partially right but you missed the point! He didn't want just a fling in bed! He wanted far more! and he even said so after she threw him out! - to wit - "it didn't have to be like this!".

He wasn't being rude. Just honest.

reply

I agree he was being a jerk.. She told him how she felt about him and he said no because she was drunk...So he sleeps with Ms. hotsie totsie skater and his only excuse is, "I don't downshift that fast!" I agree, not very classy and I expected more from the character..

reply

She was drunk and he didn't want to take advantage of her. Some people consider sleeping with a heavily intoxicated person rape. Bravo for Doug I say.

"I hate to say this, but this place is getting to me. I think I'm getting the Fear."

reply

I totally agree. Doug shut her down because he didn't want to take advantage of a drunk woman. That is a good thing! Frankly she was treating him like something she could order up on a platter. She was a rich girl who wanted him and thought she should have anything she wanted...she wasn't declaring anything romantic.
Doug was already feeling something for her, and stupidly gave into temptation on the rebound of romantic disappointment. He was only stupid there.

reply

The OP is right.

That scene really makes Doug look like a dumb ass. In rom-coms, it is not unusual for the writers to go to great lengths to create conflict between their main protagonists. They sacrificed a little of Doug's character here, though it doesn't ruin him.

First of all, it was Doug's stupidity for getting Kate drunk on tequila. He knew she had never drank before. He is lucky he didn't end up holding her hair out of the toilet all night.

Secondly, any man is going to know as soon as they find out that she dumped her fiance that it could only be for one reason. It was completely respectable that Doug didn't want to sleep with her when she was drunk, but then to sleep with another chick that very night- what an idiot.

Kate was drunk and was surely likely to regret it all in the morning. Obviously all Doug had to do was wait it out, and she was his.

His argument the next morning that he doesn't "downshift that fast" was well-written and understandable, but it still didn't explain why he felt the need to sleep with someone else on the same night that she made it clear she was interested. She was pissed off and had a reason to be.

This scene is at least partially rectified by the final scene. Doug tells Kate he thought that his love for her would go away if he just kept doing his thing. This suggests he didn't want to be in love with her or at least refused to accept it at first, which would somewhat explain his earlier behavior.

The bottom line is that the writers needed them to be in conflict until Kate's "thawing" after the debacle in the short program. So, they got Kate drunk and turned Doug into a dumb ass for one night. It happens.

reply

One thing all of you are overlooking.

The hotsy totsy skater had a great hinder. Nobody would turn that down.

Doug totally gets a pass on this one.

reply

True! Doug wanted more from her than a drunken fling. She had no right to be pissed! He slept with the red-head because he didn't care about her and she just happened to come along w/no pressure. She had no right to be pissed about that either! Say what you want, he was a caring gentleman.

Agree with most that us said here. I see the need for the scene, but I think the writers fell down in two ways: 1) They did not portray how drunk Doug must have been after cleaning out the hotel mini-fidge. I can drink quite a bit, but after that much straight vodka following that much straight tequila, I would be hammered. 2) with that in mind, they should have shown Doug to be regretful the morning hours after, not smiling and happy. He could then get mad at her as in the movie, but smiling and asking for more towels after makes Doug look like an jerk.

reply

He wasn't smiling. He looked to be emotionless as he asked for more towels. Pissed almost, like he did regret sleeping with her. That's why he ran after Kate.

reply

I actually liked the scene. I'm happy that Doug didn't take advantage of a drunken Kate. He's in love with her at this point, so he wants more than just sex with her. He says, "Not like this" when Kate throws herself at him. Good for him.

As for sleeping with that other skater, clearly he is drunk at that point (mini bar) and emotional over Kate when the girl shows up at his door. In the morning, Doug is completely cold to that skater girl when he tells her "Ask them for more towels, will ya?" And when he realizes it's Kate, he chases after her in nothing but a towel. He clearly regrets it.

It was a necessary scene to show that both Doug and Kate are in love with each other. Otherwise they both wouldn't have reacted so strongly over what happened.

What you said. Spot on.

You and I saw the scene completely differently than the OP. Nowadays, if a man takes advantage of a drunk woman they call it sexual assault or rape. Doug was indeed a gentleman.

Thank you. I rather Doug have sex with a sober Lorie Peckarovski than a drunk Kate. Kate got hurt because she thought Doug didn't want her. And I would have pissed too if Doug was smiling or laughing after sleeping with Lorie, but he wasn't. He was regretful. And the fact that Doug acted like a gentlemen when Kate threw herself at him... well he just gets my respect right there.

Interesting observation, especially given your username. But Doug only gets it half-right. The underlying premise everyone seems to be endorsing here is that it's alright for a guy to take sexual advantage of and treat a woman like s*** if she has loose morals, low self-esteem or otherwise (for whatever reason) just doesn't care. The real definition of "true love" is relating to people the way they SHOULD be treated and respected, regardless of how they view themselves.
In this way Doug reveals himself to be quite the hypocrite along with a major character flaw. What would he have done had he caught an STD or gotten Lori pregnant from their stupid, selfish one-night stand? There aren't many choices, all of which carry an inherent cost and would've messed up his developing relationship with Kate big-time.
But that's our crazy mixed-up world for you. As much as I like and appreciate the overall theme of this movie, these scenes always make me wince. 😫

You forget that there are no STD's in movieland unless they're written into the script. Same with pregnancies.

But for sure, Doug certainly still didn't know for sure how he felt about Kate so Lori was just a pleasant interlude during a drunken stupor...
