Confusing Point

Immediately before we see Dracula in London, Van Helsing's voice over tells us that vampires can moved about in sunlight just as ordinary beings are able to do so. After the chase across Europe that occurs later on in the film, Dracula is imprisoned in his coffin and cannot leave it until the sun goes down. What am I missing?

They can move about in daylight but they have virtually no powers. Plus when Dracula is walking around London in daylight, he is covered up from head to toe including gloves, top hat, and sun glasses.

Dracula couldn't leave his crate of dirt during the film's climax because he would stand no chance. That's why he waits until the sun sets to attack..unfortunately for him, Harker had a knife handy.

Much thanks.

I know this is old but I will reply. He had to sleep in his native soil every time he went to ground. His native soil was literally the dirt from the basement of his castle that the gypsy dug up and shipped to the different places he bought in London.

Van Hellsing had found all his places in London and blsssed the dirt making it useless to Dracula.

So thats why is he in his coffin he was very weak from the lack of native soil.

That isn't what it says. It says vampires are able to move around during the day, but that they're extremely weakened.

He's returned to his coffin to essentially recharge his batteries. Note that before he appears in London he feeds on every single member of the crew of the ship that brought him to London. He didn't have nearly that much blood before the final encounter.
