the missing 27 minutes

On imdb it says the film was originaly 27 minutes longer. From 128 minutes to 155 minutes.

I guess they thought the movie was too long so they edited it. Maybe they did test screening and they decided to cut it afterwards.

Anyone know if a director's cut with the additional 27 minutes available ?

reply

The film was shortened by removing scenes that were thought to be too gory for the NC17 rating they were aiming for.
I don't know if there's a longer/unedited version available

Weren't the missing 27 minutes on the recent dvd but they were included as an extra not actually inserted into the film. come to think of it .....it might be on my dvd.

The recent Blu-ray release has 28 minutes worth of deleted and extended scenes among the special features, so I assume that's all the missing footage. And admittedly, I can see why it was cut; there are some nice moments in there, but overall, it really doesn't add much and would only hurt the pacing of the film.

As I understand it was.

On July 21st, 1993 the extended version was released on laser disc from Columbia Tri-Star Video ($49.95).

A two disc set in CLV.

Back in the day I bought the Criterion box set; three discs in CAV ($124.95), August 23rd, 1993.

This was the theatrical cut.

The link above shows differences between the theatrical release and a workprint which has more deleted footage. Among them, there is a nude scene of Winona Ryder as Mina.
