did the two decide to have kids in the end?

From that final look Catherine gives Nick, it looks like she had a change of mind after Nick said they can just drop the rug rats and continue to fuck like minks for the rest of their lives. Judging by how much more intimate and tender their sex was at the end compared to the start (notice how she never ties him to the bed this time), it seems as though she had grown to genuinely love Nick on some level.

If you recall earlier in the film, Nick tells one of his colleagues that he'll use a rubber the next time they bang (not sure how he managed to not knock her up if he didn't use one the first time). We never see whether he sticks to his word or not, but it is possible that he did in fact, make an effort to use a condom every time they screwed since. In the last scene however, judging from how they decide to do it a second time right then and there, it's very possible that he never got up to put on another dick sleeve. And from there, the two, as he said, fucked like minks, raised rug rats, and lived happily ever after (until this is retconned in the second film, of course).

What do you think? Was this Verhoeven's intent this whole time with that scene that I'm only just beginning to unravel, or is it just my dirty mind leading me to overthink this?

Well in basic instinct 2 she didn't have any kids and Nick was gone so my guess is No.

That doesn't count, as I'm speaking for this film on its own terms. The sequel was made by a whole new set of filmmakers who probably never studied the original that closely, let alone understood its intent.

I'm referring to the subtext as given to us in this film alone, not how the story was ultimately continued.

She seems like the kind of woman who would actually desire children... yet she's a psycho career criminal. Could be why she doesn't want to have any.
