Is this worse than 4?

Most people at the premier of 4 said 4 is worse.

reply

Yes, it is.

reply

Absolutely not; 4 was pretty atrocious but it was a lot of fun. The problem with 4 was that it absolutely disrespected the Alien universe and slid into parody quite often. This movie, as flawed as it is, felt more artistic and as though it took itself a lot more seriously. Maybe too seriously? They don't really make too many movies like this anymore, with absolutely no comic relief and no hopeful message at the end at all. It's just unrelentingly bleak and mean-spirited, and I'm glad I saw this as a kid as I probably appreciated it that much more.

reply

I saw it as a kid too but too young to remember too much about it, i remember it was really scary. When I recently did an Aliens marathon, this movie really came up short for me.

reply

I would say no as well. I like this movie. It has terrific atmosphere, a solid cast, and suspenseful. Fincher did well

reply

I don't like this movie at all, but it does have atmosphere, a solid cast and is suspenseful. So, yeah, despite my not liking it, it is WAY better than part 4.

With its $h!tty dialog, terrible script and goofy looking CGI, part 4 looks like it was made for the Sy-Fy channel!

The one amazing thing about that film was Sigourney Weaver throwing a basketball in the hoop without even looking at it (which she did in real life... I believe on the first take!) but at the same time, basketball has no place in an Alien movie.

I also contend that the film looked pretty good too - I liked that deep crushed-black high contrast look to the cinematography but that look started to get overused in most every horror movie of the past 20 years.

reply

D@mn! That was real?! I though it was some kind of studio CGI trickery? And she did it in one take?! That is impressive! Still, it's stupid to have basketball in an Alien movie though.

The sets looked to clean and polished for my taste and the mercs space ship arrival looked really fake to me also.

I watched that... I don't think she made the shot. The ball goes beyond the point of sight. The viewer doesn't see it for enough time for it to have been either shot by someone else (who's out of sight and above the basketball hoop) or it was probably just CGI'd in.

The people in the video are actors. They are trained to act surprised and excited whenever need be. This was most likely done as hype for the film.

If I saw the ball the entire time, I may be more inclined to believe them.

reply

4 at least is in the so bad its good category, this one is just plain boring and lifeless in the worst way possible

reply

I believe the expression is "So bad it's Whedon".

reply

Not only is it much better than Alien: Resurrection, its also better than James Cameron's Aliens. Second best in the series. And not talking about the Assembly Cut either.

reply

now you're just talking stupid

reply

No, it's my genuine opinion.

reply

No. I refuse to believe this.

reply

That's fair. Free country. Not trying to convince you either, just leaving my opinion there, for whoever cares.
I prefer Alien 3's writing, editing, themes, costumes, cinematography, photography, music and Ripley's characterisation over Aliens'.
Never was bothered that Newt or Hicks died. Never cared much for "surrogate mother Ripley" - always preferred horny Ripley from Alien 3 ("Do you find me attractive?" "In what way?" "In that way.").
Cool weapons and technology in Aliens, for sure. Ugly, ugly blue screens and rear projection too though.
Some dodgy special effects in Alien 3 on the xenomorph, for sure. But no deal breaker.
Alien 3 all the way (after the first Alien).

reply

I don't believe you.

reply

I believe me.

reply

Are you on any medication that would cloud your judgement?

reply

Hahaha! Of course: on many, many of them, for most of the day my friend!
But in between psychotic episodes, Alien 3 is somehow the only thing I'm certain my judgement is absolutely positively infallible about.

reply

Every shitty sequel film to a classic has these type of people. I was on the RoboCop 2 forum and some loon said it was better than the original.

I think they see themselves as interesting and standing out from the crowd but everyone else just sees them as someone with shitty taste in movies.

Alien 3 is a mess. Lots of script rewrites and studio interference being the cause.

reply

This one was THE WORST.

reply

No. 3 is a good film with a black-as-molasses atmosphere (although I don’t consider it canon after what they did to the Aliens survivors)

4 is dumb trash. Moderately entertaining in parts but the whole ‘Ripley clone’ stuff is ridiculous, the mutant Alien baby is gross and cartoonish. Whole movie feels like a kids film with overblown gore.

reply

I thought the Ripley Clones (at least the scene with the failed ones) was the only half-decent scene in 4.

reply

This is my least favourite of the Alien movies but it's still a pretty good movie.

reply

And they were right.

IN FACT...

THE TUNNEL THE SCENE IS BEAUTIFUL...
