How did the show end?

It didn't, it was cancelled. They expected a 6th season, so there were a lot of loose ends at the end of the series which were never resolved. Reno never caught Dutch Dixon or cleared his name.

Why was the series cancelled? It was popular in the ratings for a syndicated show. If they were planning a sixth season, what happened?

It was picked up by USA during its 5th season, and they lost Cheyenne, and the storylines got weaker when it moved to the USA Network. The same fate happened to Forever Knight.

They lost Cheyenne because her and Lorenzo broke up in real life.

actually they were broken up for a while during the show. he remarried and that is why they lost her. the new wife joined the show.
