I've always wondered about that myself. The series is clearly set in California.

And where is The Badlands mountain range located?

Hint: California

The Badlands are in South Dakota and are what most understand the term "the Badlands," absent a qualifier, to mean, not some relatively obscure mountain range in California.

Just because you suck at geography does NOT mean the "mountain range in California" should be considered "obscure."
