or did it get cancelled early?

I don't for sure. However, it seems that it had a conclusion of some kind, because you can't tell a story of a fugitive forever. It seems that the ending was how it was - Dutch on the run and Reno and Sixkiller going to hunt him - so that they could come back with more episodes in the future under the same title, just in case. Despite this ending, no new episodes were produced.

The end of Renegade was that Dutch Dixon was finally exposed to the world as corrupt and he goes on the run. This happens after he is promoted to Marshall, and after he kills his own wife.

We never actually see Dutch being brought to justice, and we never actually see Reno clear his name, these loose ends getting tied are left to the viewers imagination as they never went ahead with a new season 6.

Well, Reno told his story to that other marshal/fed. But Dutch shot him, I don't remember whether he lived or not. If he lived, then Reno was pretty much clean.

According to Lamas they actually shot a series finale but shelved it because they thought it would hurt syndication deals. Far as I know it's never been released.
