Inconsistency in Immortal tingle/sensation

A few examples of these oddities are, in the season 2 episode "Under Color of Authority" where Mako is able to enter Richie's apartment and catch him naked in the shower (poor Richie, he looked like he was almost going to cry for a moment) before Richie's immortal sense kicked in.. later in the episode Richie is at a motel and senses the same guy and even though Richie looks right at him out the window, Mako doesn't seem to sense Richie until he comes up the stairs and is near the room.

Another example is in the episode "Legacy" where Duncan and Amanda are meeting with Rebecca's husband at her gravestone.. Duncan senses an immortal, Amanda does not and thinks he's imagining things.

I think it's a good thing, because it makes it interesting if the Immortal sense/tingle can sometimes work from a block away or when they are both in the same room or seemingly dependent on who is paying more attention or is perhaps focusing themselves or something which would end up giving one immortal the element of surprise.

as Color of Authority was Episode 2-12, and Richie was only turned Immortal in 2-04 I think we can attribute some of this to his being new to the Game... Mako even makes several comments during that shower scene that imply he knows just how Young Richie really is.

correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Richie the first 'Virgin Immortal' we met on the series? so this could be a combination his not having mastered his own perception of the 'tingle', as well as not setting off others' radar (Mako was his first kill) any changes in later episodes could make this 'early Installment Weirdness'... remember that in the Film, the 'radar' applied to all life, meaning an immortal could tune in on Mortals, animals etc, not just another immortal being near

- and when Richie takes the 'Damsel in Distress' to the Dojo, Duncan doesn't pick up Richie on his radar until they're at his door.
- also as to the Motel Scene; it was is if Mako picked up Richie Running away; that's why he needed to ask what room they were in.

as to Amanda, I imagine she is the perfect example of how the radar is affected by how close one is paying attention... the exact Context of the scene might help too...

Something I'd always wondered, is that when two immortals are in proximity for extended time (whether Richie and Duncan hanging out, Duncan and Amanda hooking up, or any one Duncan's flashbacks in which he's got another Immortal running buddy) Does the radar turn off, do they have a constant 'hum' or what?
- and for that matter how distinct is the Radar between two immortals (
(Kit O'Brady in Double Eagle 4-05 sneezes when people first set off his radar, and when Duncan and Amanda approach he sneezes twice and seems shocked, despite being 150+ by then, that two sneezes = two immortals)

Full Disclosure: new TV is in reruns, so I actually watched Color of Authority to accurately answer this, thanks, I hadn't watched the DVDs in a while.
