There's two reasons floating around in my head as to why Duncan sent him away.. first and most obvious was Richie's disobedience.. he's still very much new to The Game and really shouldn't be so headstrong, he should follow Duncan's lead and do what he says.. but no, Richie is too willful to do that.. even several episodes before this in "An Eye for an Eye" he fights an old friend of Duncan's Annie Devlin despite being told to leave town because she would slaughter him.. which was likely to be true due to Richie only becoming an immortal the previous episode.. but alas, Richie lies to Mac and goes to fight Annie, getting lucky as he did with Mako, though he doesn't take her head.. so clearly there is a pattern of disobedient behaviour that will get him killed if he isn't lucky (which he always is).
So, is it because Richie is disobedient and MacLeod doesn't want to be around this kind of recklessness? Or.. is it because both times MacLeod feared for Richie's life, and he doesn't want to be around to witness Richie losing his head? This might also explain why he had a tear in his eye as he banished Richie, because he already felt like Richie was dead or going to die very soon. That's what I think anyway, Mac doesn't want to be around when Richie gets himself killed.
