Does anyone know much about the inspiration behind animated characters?

I was watching Harley and Ivey. HarleyQuinn, voice-wise, reminded me of Marilyn Monroe, and Poison Ivy reminded me of one of those independent heroines of the 50s like Lauren Bacall Jane Powell, or Jayne Mansfield

Yeah, Harley is a blonde bombshell. Her accent has been described as Bronx.

Baby Doll was probably based on Gary Coleman or Emmanuel Lewis, who never really got to become adults after hitting it big as child stars on cheesy sitcoms.

Voice-wise, she owed more to Betty Boop and voice artist Mae Questel (who also did Olive Oyl). She was came from the Bronx and carried that accent throughout her career.

The main inspiration for Harley was a character that Arlene Sorkin played on Days of Our Lives, Calliope Jones. Paul Dini wrote the character specifically with Sorkin in mind.

Poison Ivy's look was heavily inspired by Tex Avery's Red Hot Riding Hood, from the MGM cartoons, filtered through the classic comic design.

Most of the rest came directly from the comics, including personalities. Catwoman and Penguin were required to reflect Batman Returns, though they tweaked the costume design a bit for Catwoman and gave Penguin a personality more in line with the comics.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
