80s and 90s animation

These were the best cartoons made. Along with spiderman, xmen, and many more. These 2 decades of cartoons were the best and I wish they had a channel that ran them again or at least an on demand one did. I miss all the Saturday morning cartoons.

I was just having a conversation with a dude I work with about 80s and 90s cartoons. I'm primarily an 80s kid, but the 90s cartoons were admittedly just so much better. Have you watched He-Man or GI Joe lately? Inspector Gadget? They're rough to watch now. The peak of 80s cartoons are the first seasons of Transformers, Thundercats and Ninja Turtles. The 90s had Batman, Superman, Garfield, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, X-Men, Pinky & the Brain, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Eek, Bobby's World, etc., which are still very watchable. The 90s were the best times for animation since Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry's golden age. Even The Tick still holds up.

Spiderman isn't in the conversation. The pacing of that show is ridiculous. It makes X-Men look like a slow burn for how ADD the editing is.

Yea I totally agree with all of those cartoons you mentioned. I never watched He-man but GI Joe yes. My fav 80s cartoon is The Real Ghostbusers, hands down. And all the 90s cartoons were awesome as well. I remember watching when I was a kid. We called the proton pack the long gun. I hope some of these cartoons get specially made on blu ray one day but as of right now even a lot of television shows have not made the cut either. For example Psych which the series just ended. But ya, these cartoons were one if a kind. I can't pick up on the new stuff. Even the new versions of TMNT. They look the same. Thanks for your reply.

I was born in the 80s and grew up on those cartoons along with the 90s ones. When it comes to superhero cartoons, there were amazing ones in the past like Batman TAS, X-men TAS and Justice League. But there are also more modern superhero cartoons that are just as thought provoking. Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Spectacular Spider-man, Young Justice just to name a few. All of these have rich plots and interesting characters.

Its amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they dont like

While I agree that BTAS was by far the best animated version of the character, the 60s Filmation Adventures of Batman was pretty good, for the time. It was mostly played straight and had clever adventures and real combat. In fact, it was the reason that cartoons of the 70s were so bland. Parental watchdog groups got so ticked off that they pressured the networks into toning things way down.

I would also argue about the 80s and 90s being the best eras for animation. It's all relative. The 60s had some fantastic animated shows: The Flintstones, The Jetson, Huckleberry Hound, Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Jonny Quest, Adventures of Batman, Speed Racer, Bullwinkle, Underdog, tennessee Tuxedo, the original Scooby Doo, and some others. The 70s had a lot of bland stuff; but, there were some gems in there, like the Groovie Goolies, Fat Albert, Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, Star Trek, Battle of the Planets (Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman, in Japan), Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z, in Japan), and one or two others. For me, the 80s were more Thundarr, the Barbarian, Flash Gordon, Thundercats, the Ralph Bakshi Mighty Mouse, Robotech, Voltron, Bionic 6, and some others. The 90s did bring some really fun stuff, like Dexter's Laboratory and the Powerpuff Girls, Batman, X-Men (kind of uneven, for me, but got better as it went on; animation was rather stiff and voicework nowhere enar the level of the WB efforts), Freakazoid, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pinky & the Brain, Aeon Fluxx, the Maxx, Beavis and Butthead, Daria, etc. Some great stuff now.

However, nothing compares to being a kid in the 70s and watching cartoons all Saturday morning. It was pretty cool to have 6 or 7 hours of network programming turned over to kids, including the uncensored Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry (they didn't really start to get chopped up until the 80s). We also got Schoolhouse Rock, which managed to be both educational and entertaining, which is more than you can say about most attempts at that kind of thing. Darn good tunes, too.

Thanks for the great response. I truly miss the Saturday morning cartoons when growing up in late 80s/90s. Would love to see my fav cartoons go on blu ray at some point instead of having larger box sets on dvd.

The cartoons from when you fell in love with animation will always be the best, though things now are far better, technically, than when I was a kid. One of the reasons I love the Venture Brothers is because it's a big riff on Jonny Quest, which was my favorite adventure cartoon. However, I think the voicework in a lot of those older cartoons was so much better, since you had people with radio experience, who acted with their voice. A lot of 80s and 90s cartoons had really flat voicework, until you start seeing things like the Simpsons and Tiny Toons and Batman TAS, where they had smart voice directors who found actors who could do old school voice acting.

I agree Golden Age.

As good as those other series were, I wouldn't lump them together with BTAS who is truly in a league of its own.

reply

^Absolutely agree.

As much as I like some of the 80's and 90's animated shows mentioned here (along with classic cartoons), BTAS was just on a completely different level.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Certainly from a story standpoint.

BTAS, Duckman and Gargoyles were absolutely INCREDIBLE!!

"AAAH!! Real Monsters!" is also pretty damn good but it wasn't too big on continuity.
