I did a marathon with Batman Mask Of The Phantasm titled When Great Loves Return. You guys can check it out on my blog.

You know, I feel like Mask of the Phantasm is the undisclosed third Batman movie in the original trilogy. You can certainly watch it that way after Batman Returns due to the return of The Joker and Bruce reflecting on his humble beginnings as Batman. Michael Keaton said that's the direction they wanted to go with the third film if Tim Burton stayed.

I agree it has that general feeling but there's no suggestion in MotP that I can recall that the Joker has 'returned' from anywhere. His reappearance/resurrection would have to be explained somehow.
