The episode 'Bane' was actually pretty awesome.

I've downloaded all 4 Seasons and have so far been watching them in random order.

I've also heard pretty mixed opinions about how Bane was handled in The Animated Series.

Now I have read the comic book Knightfall and off course the very mediocre film The Dark Knight Rises, so I'm familiar with the character.

But I actually thought Bane's introductory episode was really, really cool. They did take some liberty with his origins, which I'm actually fine with. I always prefer when adaptations take slight alterations, if I want to read the comic book I'll read the comic book.
I liked how Bane was this legendary assassin who asks 5 million for each hit. I love how collected and reserved he was, and even the accent did not bother me.
He took out Robin AND he nearly came close to killing the Batman. I actually felt this version was a perfect physical match to this version of Batman.

The only parts that I did not like were the occasions of Bane screaming. The voice just couldn't pull that off without sounding silly imo. Too high pitched and over-the-top. He actually sounded pretty intimidating when he's talking on even level.

Overall, I expected far worse. Off course they couldn't have adapted Knightfall to the animated series without atleast devoting a full season to it. As well as breaking the Batman's back itself.
Perhaps he would have looked better without the mouth showing on his mask, like his comic book design, but otherwise it did not bother me all that much.

A cool introduction to a cool character. He matched Batman both in physique and calculation.

You have no clue who Bane is if you think TAS did him well.

reply

No not really. I've always found this to be one of the series weaker episodes mainly because it stereotyped Bane as a glorified lucahdor wrestler. Seriously, It feels as though the cliches they introduced in this episode were all everyone payed attention too (More overt luchador design and portrayal, overuse of his muscles swelling from the Venom, the tube as a weakness)

The writing staff really only made this episode because of how popular Knightfall was at the time and considering how dark the actual storyline was, This episode is actually pretty silly (Batman making puns and quips, Robin being demoted to damsel in distress and having a glorified splash fight with Thornes moll)

TDKR did a much better job with Bane than this lackluster episode easily.

because it stereotyped Bane as a glorified lucahdor wrestler.
That's exactly what he IS

No, Not at all.

I'm guessing it was a "Spider-Man 3" situation, where WB/DC demanded the character of Bane be used in the show because he was the hottest, newest villain at the time. And Timm/Dini were fans of the '70s Batman and probably didn't care for Bane that much, so they altered him to fit into their universe.

Hi Blessed. I agree this version of Bane wasn't as bad as everyone says. The only thing I didn't like was the voice I felt it just wasn't menacing enough.

reply

Frankly I thought the only episode where Bane was cool was the episode Over the Edge. He was too silly in this one.

reply

I never cared about Bane all that much, and i don't think any adaptation did him well, the closest thing was Over the edge, i mean, at least he was functional as villain, but, yeah, this episode is just another example of that..to be fair, he still was fresh character at the time, and, Bruce Timm and the crew never liked Bane anyway..still, fun episode, scene with Candice and Robin is hillarious to me

reply

You just made me think of a coincidence. Bruce Timm was forced by DC to do Bane in Batman TAS and John Semper was forced by Marvel and Toy Biz to do Hobgoblin in Spider-Man TAS.

you can hear more abotu that in this podcast...they thought that Knightfall was a stupid idea..now, me personaly, i do kinda like the story, but i never adored it..i prefer No Man's Land..

reply

I have not read Knightfall but it is funny they feel that way about Bane but not about the also then fairly new villain Killer Croc.

reply

I don't personally have that much knowledge about Croc, i don't remember ever reading comics that vere heavily focused on him, in the Arkham games he was fine, i guess, this show, Vendetta is the epsiode i like, Sideshow is fine too, but the fact is, people mostly remember Croc from the epsiode Almost got im,the rock scene, as the dumb idiot, and that wasn't even really him....

reply

I don't remember ever seeing any of his episodes or most of the episodes til I bought the series on DVD around 10 years ago. I did watch some of them when it first came out. But I got addicted to Spider-Man and my parents only let me watch one TV show at the time. Though I never watched Saturday morning cartoons much as a kid. Wanted to sleep in on Saturdays. So I watched reruns of Spider-Man TAS. Also I think Batman TAS reruns got moved to UPN on Channel 49 which was a station we didnt get at the time. We couldn't get cable cause it was too expensive when you live in the country.

Vendetta is my favorite of his..

He was shown to be more accurate to the comic book version, including being somewhat intelligent, though that scene where he gets an overdose of venom is total nightmare fuel. I noticed we didn't see much of Candice after that episode, which makes me wonder if her boss had her bumped off when he found out she was planning teaming up with Bane to replace him.
