This ISN'T a remake of another movie?

Coulda sworn I was watching an original version of this movie, and I think it stared Tony Curtis. Only caught a half hour of if.

Anyone know what movie I saw?

reply

Tony Curtis & Debbie Reynolds
It was not a commercial success but I really enjoyed it. But I think I am one o fthe few. I also enjoyed Switch for the same reason. Liked the plot. And both Debbie Reynolds & Ellen Barkin did a good job of playing a man trapped in a woman's body.

reply

I don't why, but I like GOODBYE CHARLIE a lot more than SWITCH. I think in the original film the story is not told with such a sledgehammer approach as it is in SWITCH.

The movie you question is called "Goodbye Charlie" with Debbie Reynolds and Tony Curtis, a great, screwball comedy from the sixties. It's hard to find but has more funny moments than "Switch".

reply

Exactly. So why isn't there a writing credit for George Axelrod, who had scripted the 1964 movie you're talking about -- GOODBYE CHARLIE.
SWITCH is a total copycat.

Switch isn't a total copy-cat of Goodbye Charlie!

In this movie the charachter has to come back and find a woman who liked her as a man. In Goodbye Charlie the character has no idea why she is back. She remembers being a man, but she never was told by God that she had to find someone who liked her as a man. She remembers why she was shot and tries to bring the shooters to justice. In Switch she remembers who shot her, but she never really tries to bring them to justice until she is framed for her own murder.

A SIMILAR theme but NOT a Copy Cat!

reply

Riight.
And in this one Ellen Barkin admires her own poon-tang. Not Debbie Reynolds'.

Similar (both are blonde) -- but totally different (Reynolds's heavy bouquet belies her meat-laden diet, whilst Barkin's veganism hints at delicate wafts of almond and berries.)

This is actually a remake of a hardcore film from the seventies titled Angel Number 9. And yes, the makers of AN9 did recieve royalties from Blake Edwards.

reply

Wasn't there also a French film with a similar storyline? Does anyone remember the title of that one?

reply

I loved both movies and I think they are underrated.
I thought Debbie Reynolds was absolutely adorable as the man who came back after being murdered- as a woman. Tony Curtis was cute, too. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie, it is well worth your while to find it and see it.

My parents took me to see GOODBYE CHARLIE at the drive-in when I was a kid and I've loved it ever since.

I loved GOODBYE CHARLIE too. My parents took me to see it at a drive-in when I was a kid and it has been one of my favorites ever since and yes, Debbie Reynolds was adorable in it.

Way too similar not to have a credit saying "based on a screenplay by George Axelrod." The differences aren't that large that the screenwriter can claim "Switch" as an original screenplay.
