Why was Sulu barely in it?
That last shot of the crew together on the bridge just looked awkward with Takei missing.
shareThat last shot of the crew together on the bridge just looked awkward with Takei missing.
sharebecause Takei had been campaigning for sulu to get his own ship since TWOK
maybe Shatner (who Takei accused of cutting out his brief mention of becoming Captain scene in TWOKs shuttle scene) was right when he angered takei by saying 'why do you want your own ship when all the action happens on the enterprise?'
That doesn't seem to be how it was originally intended though. Since Excelsior was the one cataloging gaseous anomalies (like Shatner? I kid.) clearly the torpedo should have been modified and launched by Excelsior. That had to have been changed because Shatner wanted the glory. It seems obvious that the original script gave Sulu - and Excelsior - a lot more to do.
shareMakes sense
sharePerhaps, but it was cool seeing Spock and McCoy whipping it together.
Hmm...that didn't sound right.

Bob the Builder and Hadji walk into a bar...
Sulu got more screen time here than in a few of the other ST movies, so all in all he should be happy. And besides, his few scenes here as a captain were badass as hell

Yes, his line "Fly her apart, then!" carries so much feeling and history, it still gives me shivers.
shareFirst time I have ever heard someone bellyache about this. Sulu has plenty of screen time and everyone was happy to see him finally get to be captain of his own ship.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
Everyone's happy except for Shatner, who to me looks like he's trying to poop out a cactus when he's addressing "Captain Sulu".

Poop out a cactus ... Ouch, lol
Sounds like it's supposed to mean that something is irritating in a way.
Well--and this is just my own personal read on the thing--it's pretty well known that Shatner and Takei aren't exactly besties, and so I can't imagine Sulu being promoted to Captain (i.e. Kirk's equal) and then coming in at the end and saving Kirk's ass say very well with Shatner. And just watching him have to thank "Captain Sulu"... I don't know, Shatner looks like he's saying it with his Tribbles in a vice grip if you know what I mean.
