Fire extinguishers???

This has irked me for over 20 years. What is with the prevalence of silver wall-mounted fire extinguishers on the Enterprise and Excelsior???!!!

reply

There is still fire in the future. Whats the problem.

Yeah, I get that. But WHY the preponderance of wall-mounted, silver, 20th century styled, ABC, pressurized fire extinguishers? If you look at any/every other Star Trek film, you will be hard pressed to find a preponderance, let alone one, fire extinguisher in a scene occurring on the Enterprise. I've scoured the internet for an explanation, like some tidbit from a set designer or writer that they were symbolic or 'easter eggs,' and nada.

We can probably assume -- external similarities aside -- that the fire extinguishers seen in The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country are probably considerably more sophisticated internally than our own 20th Century-model extinguishers, and probably do not use the same chemical compounds in favor of something more advanced than what we currently have today.
