Why no Prince John?

I thought the story always had Prince John as the main villain and the Sheriff of Nottingham was his henchman. Now they've made the Sheriff the villain and introduced Guy of Gisborne to fill the henchman role. I have no problem with it, but just wondering what the reason for the switch might have been.

The sheriff was the enforcer on the ground. This is the bad person which most people had contact with and familiarity with. This is why they decided to do this most likely. Too many and it makes a plot complicated. And it could be a 'cops and robbers' plot this way--with a twist!!

I hate to burst your balloon, but this film hardly "introduced" Guy of Gisbourne. Sir Guy has been part of the Robin Hood legend since at least 1650. He has been part of many iterations since. Basil Rathbone, for instance, played the character in 1938.

It's ok, I didn't have much of a Gisborne balloon to burst. Wasn't aware of him until Prince of Thieves.

Maybe it has to do with the Disney Animated Robin Hood having him be all lame and played for a joke.
