Just started watching this...
...and, after 45 minutes, I'm not really getting it. Should I stop and rent it on DVD or try to keep watching on F/X? Seems interesting for some reason. But it's difficult to tell.

Keep watching.........it's the ending (and Mimi Rogers' choices) that makes the film so provocative.
there is a harmony in our voices that is a comfort if you choose to listen.
Too late to help you now, perhaps, but just a thought:
If you see it on F/X, yer probably missing a lot of the provocative sex scenes, which are instrumental to the story...it is NOT boring in the first 45 minutes!! It gets heavy, but by then you are into it more. I'd say, watch it, but only if it's uncensored/uninterrupted by commercials. It draws you in and then leaves you kind of breathless. Not a movie to watch with popcorn and friends yakking at you.
Good luck, and let us all know if you see "The Pearl" some night
I can shuffle cut and deal but I can't draw a hand

You're having a normal reaction, the movie absolutely sucketh. some wackos decision doesn't make the movie compelling. It won't stay with you, leaving a sensing grip of irony and sear, just sear itself into your memory.
It will probably be like this vague revulsion it leaves you with where you kinda wish you went skateboarding or surfing or just vegged out getting a tan in the backyard instead, at least those are pleasant experiences.
This movie makes one glad you aren't a hired film reviewer.
