I like this movie for other reasons that just Mimi Rogers taking off her top, but I hate to see an R-rated film edited in the DVD release. I've heard that even the widescreen DVD crops Mimi's shower scene so that her toplessness is done away with. Why? She definitely has nothing to be ashamed of there...
***Edited to add:
Just got the DVD, and, yes, Mimi's bodaciousness has been cropped out of the shower scene.
The disc was, for some reason, incorrectly framed during production compared to the original cinema aspect ratio, which really sucks considering fans waited so long for it to be released on dvd to begin with, so they could have at least tried to get everything right. It's definitely not a censorship thing, as not only do they talk unashamedly about such scenes on the audio comm track, but Mimi of course has done nudity in plenty of other films as well. Nope, it was a production side screw up, pure and simple.
i watched the movie for the first time last night. i remember a part where she was getting out of the shower and you almost see something that you don't. i figured that it was noticeable in the full-screen version of the movie and not the widescreen. what some people don't know is that you see more of the top and bottom with full screen. the director's intended vision is for the left and right, so the director shoots the film with this is mind.
if you watched the television version of ocean's eleven, there is a part with brad pitt eating shrimp cocktail. you can notice a continuity error, since the film wasn't intended to be seen in fullscreen. it switches from shrimp cocktail, to a plate of shrimp, back to shrimp cocktail. watch the widescreen version and you'll never see it.
as the o.p. mentions, this film is good for other reasons (the whys and wherefores of religious faith, especially in a post-literate, scientific/technological society) besides mimi rogers' beautiful breasts. and you see her in all her magnificence in other films ("full body massage," or "door in the floor," for example); but it is a shame that films so often fall victim to their very dependence on the media through which their messages are carried. in this case, the dvd. you rarely hear about books or albums losing content because of the way they're formatted. b.t.w., here's a link to a nice nude of her in "door in the floor" (where she poses for the artist that jeff bridges plays): http://www.robbscelebs.co.uk/noops632/mimi_rogers_the_dorr_hdtv0001.jpg
This is the devil's work I am sure, I mean does anyone NOT want to see Mimi's beautiful body?! I hope this is fixed in next pressing, or else what buy the VHS?
Censorship is unhealthy for a society's arts, literature, and life.
