Great Great Movie

Such a wonderful western film, and no one has seen it. Sad, very very sad. This is by far my favortie western...I saw it for the first time when i was eight years old. And I didn't really understand it then...i just saw...Cowboy, gun, goes bang bang real fast, yay...Eventually as i got older and more into movies...I truely understood it, and loved it even more. Classic movie and I have no clue why no one has seen it. Its awsome!...Notice the quote i have, this movie is by far my favorite western, and one of the best of all time!

"I said I never had no use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it..."

Quigley Down Under, Open Range and Unforgiven are the three best westerns made since The Outlaw Josey Wales, in my opinion. I like Siverado and Lonesome Dove but these three are the cream of the crop. I always hoped for a sequal to QDU but it never happened. Thats a shame. I've noticed that the people who've seen it generally love it.

reply

I'm really glad to hear good things about Open Range. I really liked that movie, but it seems like alot of people didn't give it a chance because of Costner. Their loss, it was a great film. Unforgiven was the ULTIMATE anti-western, anyone who is really into westerns will agree that Unforgiven was one of the most satisfying films of the 90's. I personally think that Sergio Leone's "spaghetti western" trilogy contained what could very well be the best movie ever made: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. That one is self explanitory, if you know the movie you know I'm right. I have never EVER heard anyone say they didn't like that movie, and I doubt I ever will. I grew up with that one, and it will always be very special to me. For a Few Dollars More, the second film in the trilogy, is an absolute classic, but still nowhere near as good as TGTBTU. Now I have never seen Quigley Down Under, and know almost nothing about it, and before a few weeks ago, probly never would have seen it. But my buddy absolutely loves that movie, and he has great tastes in movies; I listen to his opinions alot more than he knows... SO yeah, I am sure going to check that one out. Red River with John Wayne also rocks, for those of you up for a little black and white lol. Tombstone has some SICK shootouts, but as good as some of the other movies I mentioned. And who could forget Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?????? Not as western as most westerns, but still one of my favorties. I love the genre, and will definately check out Quigley as soon as I can.

My Western genre expirience has greatly grown since my first post, which was the beginning of this board... Wow, In fact... I saw The Outlaw Josey Wales about thirty minuets ago... it... was... AWSOME... I have also seen The Good, The Bad and The Ugly... thats like... AWSOME ... times maybe three billion, possibly four... It was nice of you to say that about my suggestions btw bobfred, and I'm eager to hear what you have to say about Q.D.U. since I let you borrow it tonight... But about you saying you dont think anyone will ever not like TGTBTU... Sadly... Thats not true... you're forgetting my neighbor across the street... LOL... He's difficult... But Quigly Down Under is still one of my favorites even after i've been introduced into the insanely awsome... relm... or wutever you want to call it... Of Clint Eastwoods movies...Wow...

HAHAHAHAHAHAH yeah, I forgot about that guy.... he's hopeless. Has he seen Quigley Down Under yet, because that was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! How could he NOT like that one!?!?! I'm estatic about it! That was so good, I still can't believe it! QDU was one of the best surprises I have had recently: I really didn't know what to think going in, but I ended up LOVING it! The dialogue is great, as you have obviously picked up on with your signature. The action was CRAZY!!! DUDE!!!! AWESOMENESS ALL OVER THE PLACE!!! I'm definately watching The Outlaw Josey Wales soon, cuz if you dug it, G36C, its gotta be good! Thanks again for Quigley, EVERYONE SHOULD GO SEE IT!!!

Yea, really a great movie. I was thinking, they coulda taken the film and made a seriese out of it. They could have come up with a lot of interesting films... Just a thought... Wouldn't want to have another Matrix type situation happen though, great first movie, horrible sequals...

"I said I never had no use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it."

reply

Yeah, with the title like it is, I was wondering if that was something they had already done. Like, if there was a "Quigley in New York" or "Quigley Goes to England" or "Quigley vs. Predator" (jkjkjk) before this "Down Under". I this is good enough as it is though, you wouldnt want to run the risk of a bad sequal.

Yea... Oh well... Sellek is too old now... I just wish this film would get out, and some people would watch it... more than .001% of the U.S.... So good, and no one even knows about it...

My favourite film of all time:

"I said I never had no use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it.." gotta love it.

reply

I enjoyed it. Does seem strange why it was buried and never did well.

reply

I think this was a really good film, and I'm not even a fan of Westerns. I actually bought the DVD, I liked it that much.

reply

Truly one of the great Westerns. It is the kind of movie that, even though I own it on VHS and DVD, I still have to sit down and watch it anytime it pops up
on TV. It was on yesterday afternoon as a matter of fact and I was almost late for my son's baseball practice because of it, lol. It is that good.

reply

Selleck isn't too old, G36. That's kinda the point in westerns. It ain't a young man's game. Look @ Eastwood in 'Unforgiven'. Duvall in 'Lonesome Dove' & 'Open Range', Sam Elliott in just about anything. Even John Wayne. Look how late in life he made westerns--& Selleck's in much better shape.
Check out 'The Shadow Riders' & 'The Sacketts'--both w/Selleck & Elliott(they play brothers). 'Crossfire Trail' & 'Last Stand @ Sabre River'--w/Selleck. 'Conagher' & 'The Quick & the Dead'--w/Elliott (not the Sharon Stone film).
BTW, as far as Rosie--I'm pro-gun control, but this is westerns. A different era. Nothing to do w/our current reality.

Yum - Tom Selleck is NOT TOO OLD. I was in heaven when he appeared with the 2nd sexiest man in my opinion Sam Elliot (Tom being the first). Quigley Down Under is a wonderful movie with just the right amount of romance, humor, shooting, etc. Tom Selleck is perfect in this role. To me, he is just as sexy as the day I saw him for the first time on Magnum. QDU is my favorite western, a genre I don't particularly care for.

The actual reply is "I said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it."

reply

Yep, my favorites are:

• Silverado
• Open Range
• Lonesome Dove
• Quigley Down Under
• The Man from Snowy River

reply

Absolutely in agreement. IN fact, Rosie O'Donnell should have a Clockwork Orange style treatment so she has to be force fed huge doses of Quigley, Josey Wales, Open Range, and several others with her eyelids taped back and strapped into a chair. Maybe next time she might choose not to ambush Tom Selleck or anyone else for that matter in order to push her anti-gun agenda.

reply

This is a great film. I think Rickman is really good and so is Selleck.

Scaper for life.

reply

I'm really enjoying all the posts on this board. It shows how this is such a good film, and hardly anyone knows about it. Rickman and Selleck were amazing, and the story was phenominal. I have also noticed that the theme song in Q.D.U. was also played in a John Wayne classic western I saw a few weeks ago. I found it very interesting, i dont think the song was identical, but very similar. (Anyone know what movie I'm talking about?) I can't remember, but if i had to guess, it would be The Sons Of Katie Elder, i think... Im not sure.

"Well if there's gunna be any shooting, I gotta get my rest."

reply

Such a severly under-rated film. I loved it. Great dialogue, perfect acting, a well done sniper film in the style of a western.

reply

Today I was in Physics class and out of no where he(my teacher) said it was his all time favorite movie, with Star Trek 4 in close second place. Not much of a Star Trek guy but I'll watch this film almost anytime.

Scaper for life.

reply

The film, cinematography, actors, and soundtrack are excellent. One of my top five films of any genre.

I do not care for Mr. Selleck in any other movie or TV show (Mag PI)except for the mediocre remake of Monty Walsh. He was made for the western Quigley, though.

There were many standard cliches in the movie and some that fit the script and one I particularly like:

"Lady, you are about a half bubble off of plumb and that is for sure and certain"

Thats an interesting mix, but I would have to agree with him on it being the all time favorite. Im still a youngin, considering the year this was made, I was born, but I do enjoy it a lot. Its good to see others do too.

reply

It's one of my favorite western. It even could easily be the best western of the last 20 years... Simply a masterpiece!

reply

[deleted]

Yeah, especially since that award goes to "Unforgiven." ;)

reply

I completely agree with you - it is the very best western ever - he ever surpasses the "Duke" - this was made for just Tom!!!!

I also responded on another "Quigley" thread, that the soundtrack did indeed remind me a great deal of "The Sons of Katie Elder" - especially the scene where he leaves Cora, rides up the hill and looks back at her and she smiles at him.

This is a very underrated film. It is one of those movies that if you are scanning the channels and it happens to be on, you can start watching it right there to the end.

reply

It's on on ITV3 tonight!! haven't seen it yet but really looking forward to it...

reply

Parts of the Quigley theme are exactly the same as Sons of Katie Elder. The first time I watched this movie I said that while hearing the opening music.
I love this movie even though I am not a big westerns fan. Tom Sellack was perfect in this as the hero and Alan Rickman was perfect for the villian. Rickman reminded me of the old-fashioned type of villain (as in Perils of Pauline, etc.) and I kept waiting for him to say "Curses, foiled again!"

It's on UPN tonight...

I love Westerns as a rule - and this one's a good one. Selleck is also one of my favorite actors.

reply

Just watched it on Hallmark tonight for the very first time and LOVED IT!!
Mainly, because my man was in it.

I've seen many western films but this is my absolute favorite. I love seeing Alan Rickman as a cowboy!!!

I'm a Proud Obsessed Alan Rickman Fan

reply

I am not a huge fan of westerns but I do like a select few. Quigley has a good wit ..sometimes in unlikely places.

Alan Rickman is a great bad guy.
Selleck can sure sit a horse.

reply

Yes, I agree that QDU is a great western. You haven't seen a classic western, though, until you've watched "Once Upon a Time in the West" with Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda (as the bad guy!), and Jason Robards.

reply

He looks fabulous on a horse, or being dragged by a horse, hell, he looks good doing nothing at all but standing still. What posture he has!

reply

Most definitely, this is one of the best westerns I've seen. IMO, it ranks right up there with Unforgiven, TGTBATU, and all the John Wayne classics. It's right in line with the genre, and yet it has a sense of being different; it's fresh to me. Great acting, good storyline, and an excellent score by the unparalleled Basil Poledouris (RIP, maestro, you will be sorely missed).

Now I have to get a copy of this.

reply

None of you are obviously Australian. This movie is a pile of *beep* Go see some good Aussie westerns if you want to see colonial Austrlia. This movie was an embarassment.

reply

Which Aussie western in particular?
"The Story of Ned Kelly"? Or "The Ned Kelly Story"? Maybe "The Bandit Ned Kelly"? How about "Ned Kelly and his Gang of Bandits"?
There's such a wide variety.
Please.

reply

We of the Never Never, The Man from Snowy River, My Brilliant Career, Jedda, The Proposition, and for recently federated Australia: Jessica, Rabbit Proof Fence, and many many more.

Like i said, this movie was a pile of dogs *beep* You are an ignorant weed.

Opinions are like asssholes. Everybody has one.

It's a great film even for those who do not like westerns (raising hand) or who do not consider it a western.

It's a wonderful moving and meaningful film, and reminds me more of Dances with Wolves than it does a western.

In fact, I think that's one reason the movie slid into obscurity -- it is too much like DWW, which came out exactly a month after Quigley, and quickly overshadowed its humorous cousin. Also Selleck was NOT taken seriously as a film star at that time, and people stayed away from his films.

Too bad, as this is an excellent film, for both genders and for the whole family. Please don't call it a western or you'll scare off the women who will love it!

. . . . . . . .

reply

We watch this movie over and over again. Whenever it is on, we are there.

reply

This is one very underrated film. Very enjoyable and a must own if you like Westerns.
