Why did he say his mother's boyfriend didn't abuse him??

Norman tells the radio host that his mother's boyfriend never abused him, but he did! He engaged Norman in that weird boxing match, and hit him hard and verbally insulted him.
That statement always confused me.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Probably meant the man never like constantlu abused him. Like just beat him up for the hell of it or something.

Yeah Chet was a jerk and Norman was jealous of the place he held in his mother's affections but I think Norman was trying to avoid those listening jumping to the "easy" conclusion that he is the way he is because someone was mean to him - remember he's trying to justify his "bad blood" hypothesis.

Chet didn't abuse Norman. That "weird boxing match" as you call it wasn't abuse. He was trying to teach Norman to box. To toughen him up. Norman was such a nervous little twitch that he was often uncomfortable to watch. Chet was just trying to build his confidence and make him more comfortable in his own skin. Norman just wasn't a fighter.
