Why does the teacher get all happy

…when junior answers 3+2 is 5? He says something about “someone’s finally paying attention”, which I don’t get. All those other kids were just answering questions no problem. The teacher is all stressed about murph’s gonna repeat the grade again but just because junior answers, he’s suddenly happy? I gotta be missing something.

It might've been to downplay the situation, because he knew how Murph gets when upset, or just a way to break the tension in the room. It's obvious Murph is playing some dumb game, so why not play along and act like the person who answered just did a great thing?

Oh that actually makes sense! It always bugged me that that scene seemed like nonsense but I bet you’re right. Thanks!
