Taken for granted that a detective would be a martial arts master

I always thought it was so weird that there was no mention of Gino's martial arts training or any background given to it whatsoever. He just happened to be an NYPD narcotics detective who could stick fight with a Kali master and throw people with Kotagaeshi.

I don't understand why the producers and writers couldn't have just inserted even a few lines of dialogue making up some backstory. It would have been somewhat more realistic.

One of the reasons I love this film is it's one of the few that doesn't bang on at length about Seagal's history as a martial artist, CIA operative, assassin, king of the universe, possessor of a twelve inch dick, etc. Ok, we have to sit through a couple of stories about his childhood, but they're hilarious so it's all good.

Well put. Because the mysterious, no birth record, CIA operative, weapons master, black ops commando crap was getting old really quickly.

I always wondered as a kid why there was no mention of his martial arts background for this movie. After seeing Above The law and Hard to Kill, everything made sense.

Clearly though, Marked For Death doesn't mention his martial arts background either.
