The Poster is such a rip off of Major League
All they did was change the baseball to a football, change the mohawk to a cowboy hat add a moustache, even the background is the same...
good movie though

The same idea is represented. In that way they are similar. They both have characturized balls and images of the cast as photographs. The Necessary Roughness poster is not a rip off though. Perhaps if you saw it one day and then saw the major league poster another day you might say it was a rip off. Im sure if it was a copy there would have been some changes. Since they were both Paramount Sports-Comedies, they probably didn't care too much about similarities.
shareNecessary Roughness was really more of a comedy takeoff or parody of North Dallas Forty then it was a rip off of Major League

Most sports comedies are rip-offs of movies like "Slap Shot" that features an over-the-hill, veteran player, some rookies and assorted eccentric characters on an underdog team. But most of them are still watchable. Its a formula that doesnt really get old as long as the sport is changed and the subplots are different.
sharelol he said the poster is a ripoff, not the movie

The whole movie seemed like a rip-off of MAJOR LEAGUE, except that this film was about football and not baseball. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but it was hard to overlook the similarities between the two films.
shareYes, Necessary Roughness is a rip-off of Major League, story AND poster. It's what happens in Hollywood when a movie becomes a hit. Major League came out in 1989 and did very well at the box-office, what happens next is studio executives either commission a writer/writing team to pen a screenplay, or they greenlight something they already have the rights to. As long as they're getting something that is similar to that recent hit film. They fasttrack it and get it out there with a similar advertising campaign to that recent hit film. And then they hope that the average filmgoing public will think "I'll probably like this because it reminds me of (insert recent hit film)".
shareFact is that this gimmick can be used in a movie about every team sport. Im surprised there hasnt been a decent basketball comedy (besides The Sixth Man and Rebound) since the 70s. Id like to see more sports comedies about boxing, tennis, golf.
shareFor boxing check out Diggstown. Great boxing/gambling/con movie with comedic undertones. For golf check out Tin Cup. Can't help you with tennis though.

The difference was that MAJOR LEAGUE was based upon a professional baseball team. Necessary Roughness was about a university football team. Yes there are similarities but there is a difference though.
In MAJOR LEAGUE the owner wanted to move the team down to Florida but with Necessary Roughness did not have the Dean wanting to move the university at all though.
If it was about a pro football team then you can call it copying. There are similarities but it is different though.

yes, I agree there is quite a close resemblence to Major League, so can anyone confirm that these two did or didn't share the same film production company or same marketing/advertisement company. Copyright stuff wasn't as hardcore back then as it seems to be today, so maybe they aren't linked?

The writers were trying to cash in on the popularity of Major League is all they were doing. Still they made money off of both films. If you look at it is a copy of The Badnews Bears if you look at it.

oooohhhh -- the poster!! Gasp!!! Whatever shall we do? A poster!!!
Definitely a ripoff. I even looked up to see if it's supposed to have some connection to Major League, but nope.
shareHere are real rip off posters. Take a gander at the Daddy Day Care Poster. They just Photoshop someone's face over Cuba's.

Every person that served can be called a veteran, but not every veteran can be called a Marine.
Probably because they were made by the same artist. I think it's cool. Necessary Roughness is very much like a Major League for college football.
shareBoth films came from Paramount Pictures and the poster for this movie was deliberately based on the one from Major League at the behest of the studio execs.
shareIt's specifically stated in the trivia that it was intentionally copied from Major League.
