Necessary Roughness vs. Replacements

Did anyone else think that The Replacements with Keanu Reeves was a complete rip off of Necessary Roughness??? Think about it:

Old coach trying to prove something finds a bunch of losers to form a football team, including a quarterback who used to be good but never took the next step, an overweight foreign lineman, a fast receiver who can't catch, also, key on the quarterback getting the girl parts...

Don't get me wrong, I like both movies, I kinda got mad when I saw The Replacements cause it ripped off alot of Necessary Roughness, which is a very underrated movie.

Good point.

I actually watched Necessary Roughness tonight....and was thinking how it was kinda of a ripoff on Major League.

a bunch of losers put together, they start off horrible, there's a foreign player and they have players who can't do the basic things. In Major League, the catcher gets the girl...catchers are often considered the leaders of a team, just like a quarterback.

I do like Major League, Necessary Roughness, and The Replacements, but yeah, all of them have sort of the same basic plotline.

They're all feel good happy ending losers win it all movies, so of course they're all similar.

If you want original you have to go for the true story movies, and even they're somewhat the same because who wants to sit through a movie where they suck in the end?

Well they say that Hollywood only something like 7 scripts so...either way I personally preferred "The Replacements" to me it was better and far less of a screwball comedy but I have a soft spot for "Major League" and "Necessary Roughness" just because I saw them first.

I haven't read all the "rip off" threads, but of all the ones I have read, I'm surprised they all missed the part or comparison about the kicker of both movies were "soccer" players. Or the Army Sarge / Danny Bateman (cop) comparison. Both were intense.

The Replacements is my all time favorite football movie, followed by the original The Longest Yard. However, I had seen Necessary Roughness once back when it first came out - so I just downloaded it now and I'm watching it. This ain't bad, LOL. I can hardly believe this was 21 years ago. I remember when this came out like it was more recent than this.

Naw, The Replacements wasn't even close to being a rip off of Necessary Roughness. If anything, N.R. took elements & characters from The Longest Yard just as much as T.R. had similar characters to those in N.R. Hell, even The Program could be compared to N.R. They even had a couple of the same actors, quarterback love story, the guy that needed a tutor, etc. If The Replacements is a rip off of Necessary Roughness, then that would be like saying Shawshank Redemption is a rip of Escape From Alcatraz, IMHO.

Necessary Roughness and The Replacements were inspired by completely different events. Necessary Roughness scenario comes from the SMU college football team's suspension, while The Replacements is based on the 4 weeks when the NFL players went on strike.

SMU football program was decimated due to numerous recruiting violations and every scholarship the college had was rescinded. The events that inspired The Replacements came directly from the NFL when the players went on strike for a month and the owners refused to cancel any games. The NFL owners brought in anybody who they could to create their 55 player rosters. So there might be some similarties between the films. But they were inspired two completely different events and one is in now way, shape or form a remake of the other.

Not really a ripoff at all. The guys in Necessary Roughness, with the exception of Blake and Krimm, were all students with zero experience or very little experience. The Replacements was made up of a bunch of mostly former pros and college players. Basically the Replacements were actually a good football team, they just needed to gel.

I didn't think rip off but I thought Necessary Roughness a lot better of a movie. The Replacements was quite lame. Keanu can't pass for a QB.
