You're probably thinking of 'Saved' in '04
He didn't step away after this movie. Home Alone 2 came out the year after this, whether you consider that good or not is debatable. Then he had 5 movies come out in the two years after that, the best probably being The Good Son. The last of those movies was Richie Rich which was a surprising bomb, that is when he took a break from acting. Perhaps he was burned out from the schedule he had just gone through, or the issues in his family, most notably his father, were taking their toll on him. Either way, it was 9 years before he did anything, and he still doesn't do very much, and not any thing really note worthy.

shareThis movie was an attempt to make him into a heart throb for heterosexual teen girls. But if he was palling around w Michael Jackson at the time---it was self-defeating for the movie. It did not do as well as the studio had hoped. Think they should have not tried for a sequel, apparently done to attempt a last boost with the girl's career.
shareHe also made his way to Home Alone II. As well as The Good Son and three additional films in 1994 before he went on hiatus for nine years.
