Veda's poem: SPOILER ALERT

Veda's poem at the end of the movie was really beautiful. It demonstrated both her memory and appreciation of her dear friend, expressed her grief, but also made clear her comprehension that, even though Thomas J. was gone, he would always be a part of her ("he will always be in your heart"). I would certainly hope that Veda stuck with writing because she turned out to be excellent at it. Writing was also clearly cathartic for her.

Also, the fact that she went back to class to read her poem showed that she had grown up a lot. Remember her dad refused to give her money for the class because she had already tried learning the violin and being a ventriloquist and immediately lost interest? She had many excuses not to go: her friend died, she had confessed her love to the teacher, and she had nothing to lose since it was an adult writing class. The fact that she was wearing a dress and had her hair down showed she was growing up as well. Excellent ending to a very good--but sad--movie.

I sobbed at the ending the other night. I've seen this movie hundreds of times but it just really got me the last time I watched it. I lost my best friend and it just broke my heart to see someone else mature and move on in such a short amount of time. Sadly, life is like that, we have to move on and we grow from those experiences. It was bitter sweet to see.

Thank you for your post, it means alot to me. I'm on my grief journey, I lost my father almost 3 years and family pet 1 1/2 yrs ago.

I'm watching My Girl now, I'm so emotionally moved by Vada's poem.

Sorry for your losses, you guys. Life is hard, it really does break your heart. My dog died March 11th and, even though with a dog you get it knowing you will probably outlive it, the emptiness I feel without him is terrible. I think that's why, even though I first saw this movie when it came out and have watched it many times since, Veda's poem finally hit home. And it's true, our loved ones will always be in our hearts.

Sadly, life is like that, we have to move on and we grow from those experiences.

Agreed. (hugs)

And the way she read it! Almost crying! She should have won an award.
