Touching and natural without being cheesy and sweet. Can you suggest other movies like this? Beautiful shots and cinematography, may be about loss of innocence and growing up, or just any topic but with this "80's/90's" vibe to it. Take "Stand by me" or "Inventing the Abbotts"(yeah i did like it lol) as an example :) Would appreciate it. (if that helps, my list of ratings is public)

I'm not sure, but I watched School Ties about a month or two back and think it might be a good film to add to this category whatwith its similar setting or time period (i.e. 1950s); the dazzling colors of fall in New England; the preppy boy school every guy wishes he went to growing up (well...at least I do); the budding romance; etc.

shareI agree. This was a great period piece of simple yet dramatic storytelling, involving believable, everyday people.
And yes, "beautiful shots and cinematography..." Two of my favorite scenes: [spoiler]A remorseful Dani, waiting in solitude in a hospital corridor to see her mother with a simple bouquet of yellow flowers in her hands; the reconciliation of the sisters in combined grief at the fresh grave site.[/spoiler]
I enjoyed it as well.

shareAs a coming-of-age drama in the South, it reminded me of “Ode to Billy Joe” (1976), along with bits reminiscent of "The Great Santini” (1979), “My Girl” (1991), “Lawn Dogs” (1997) and “Simon Birch” (1998).
"The Man in the Moon" is as good, or better, than the best of those.
