Recollections from my dad
My dad is in his 80s and he has told me stories about his time in the service and when he met my mom. Several stories hes told me over the years pertain to this assassination. While my dad was in the marines, a man tried to recruit him to fight with Castro in the late 50s. This was when batista was still in power. In 1962 and part of 1963, he and my mom were living in a trailer not too far from where Jack Ruby lived in Oak Cliff. My older brother who was a baby, was suffering from too much fluid in his head. My parents thought he was going to die. My mom told a co worker who was a cuban woman. She practiced santeria and told my mom to leave my brother with her overnight. The next morning my mom picked him up and he was fine. In 1967, my dad was training to be a Sea Bee and his training school was on Camp St in New Orleans. One day the school was put on alert and told that they might be deployed out. My dad and his fellow trainees thought they were going to Vietnam. They were told they would be going to Egypt. This is around the time of the USS Liberty attack. And this is also around the time of the garrison investigation. Funny how he was around for some of the peripheral events and characters surrounding the assassination.
