I'm surprised this wasn't nominated for best picture.
I feel like it would have won if it had. Very zeitgeisty and exactly the kind of thing the industry eats up.
shareI didn't much care for this film, despite the strong cast... It was better than the dreadful Prince of Tides but even if that hadn't been nominated, I think there were several films ahead of this in the wings - Thelma & Louise, The Fisher King, Boyz n the Hood to name three. If there had been the current system of up to ten nominees this might have slipped in but I don't remember it being much of a deal at the time so I don't think it would have been a winner.
