Like Crash

Anyone else find this movie a lot like Crash?

Car sex or Magnolia with soliloquies?

Or do you mean Wladimir Tschebotarjow's 3-hour masterpiece?

reply

Magnolia with soliloquies.

Yup. I saw "Grand Canyon" years ago. My wife rented "Crash" this week and just from seeing little snippets of it while walking in and out of the room and hearing it from the kitchen, I found myself thinking, "This is just like 'Grand Canyon'". So I guess it's not just our imaginations.

Crash is not as good and is too unrealistic and overbearing. For some reason, I have a problem thinking that a guy has a death wish after two encounters with racism.

"I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?"
"Dogs and cats living together . . . mass hysteria!"

Yip, even here in Scotland a pub-full of sweaty friends agreed that this was just like 'Crash' - which is like an English-language version of Amores Perros.

You can take a horse to water, but you can't climb a ladder with a bell in both hands.

except Amores Perros is waaaaaaaay better than Crash.

reply

Umm... you guys are aware this movie came out first, right? Cool, glad we cleared that up. :P

reply

Yes, the basic ideas are similar. People of different races dealing with day to day life in LA. The difference is that Grand Canyon actually has some respect for it's audience. Crash treats it's audience like they're all simple minded idiots who need a movie to tell them that racism still exists in the world.

Crash can't carry Grand Canyon's jock.

Agree...if I see another self-congratulatory interview with Haggis talking about how deep his movie is, I'm gonna do a drive-by, and then weep softly outside a mosque about how the system further corrupts this fallen world, while a yuppie pats me reassuringly on the shoulder with one hand, the keys to his Audi in the other.

reply

Agree, it's a lot like Crash... well, actually it's the other way around cause this movie is much older as someone alse already said. This makes me say that Crash is not such a great movie so as to win the Oscar, not to mention that Amores Perros, which is older too, reflects the idea previously presented in Grand Canyon from a deeper and even more artistic manner.

a lot mate!

and a lot like magnolia also.

reply

I too agree. I liked Crash, but Grand Canyon, even 15 years after it was made, still very much rings true as to the pulse of Los Angeles, humanity.

Amores Perros is another good comparison. I didn't connect to Magnolia as much. An independent film that's in the festival circut right now along these lines is Stastics. Do an IMDB search for it.
