One of the great unsung movies of the 90s

I remember being really impressed by this film when it first came out, and now having seen it again, it's so good to see that it hasn't lost any of its truth. I find it a remarkable examination of the way our society is going down the toilet (quite similar to the more ambitious "Short Cuts" I guess). But the amazing thing is that through all the violence and the hate and the rage, there's still hope trying to find its way through. The film's premise that there are little miracles happening all around us every day and how we must learn to spot them is so right and so true for the world that we now find ourselves in. It teaches us a really life-affirming lesson. And that's why I think it's one of the great unsung movies of the 90s.

It was a nice surprise to find it among my video tapes. I had forgotten what a beautiful film it is: exquisitely put together and acted. I'm glad I found it again.

am i the only one (i hope not) who thinks this is about a bazillion times better than 'crash'?

I totally agree! Crash was a cheap (and extreme) copy of Grand Canyon. When the horrible Crash won the Oscar, I got my friends to check out Grand Canyon to see how this subject matter should be treated. They all liked GC better and were surprised they missed it until now.

Outstanding acting. Impeccable writing. Stunning cinematography. Mesmerizing music.

Masterpiece.

...and that's all I have to say about that.

Absolutely!
I saw this film in theatres with my parents and their friends, and was in tears through much of it (my stepmother always tells me how embarrassed she was by this).
Went to see it 5 more times (by myself, of course!).

NEVER unsung by me. ALWAYS Has been one of my all time favorites.
I saw it 3 or 3 times in the theater. And several times since.
Just now I recall it as about Miracles and how we have a hard time accepting them as such. Something like that.

The way the earthquake seen was done with Kline was fabulous.
Not much a Glover fan but his entrance and exchange with the gang bangers was classic.

etc. etc.

I just rewatched it for the first time in years. The dialogue is intelligent but accessible, detailed but at the same time feels sparse. I also love the storyline and cinematography. The acting is great and everyone's so well cast. It's also interesting (and somewhat depressing) that some of the things the film touches upon are still happenning, twenty years on.

Such an underrated gem.
