Subdued but powerful soundtrack

I loved this movie. I saw it when it came out, back in 1991, leaving me with intense feelings. I saw it againg on late night TV presentation recently on Télé-Québec. Without any advertisings. I did not remember the superb intense and powerful aspect of the eerie new age style soundtrack. Kind of haunting synthetised angels voices surroundind some key scenes of this movie.
15 years later, Grand Canyon aged very well. A must see. Better than Paul Haggis Crash.

I love the music! I have some of the soundtrack on my iPod.

...and that's all I have to say about that.

Agree. One of JNH's best. Arguably his first great score.

I believe the composer, must have been listening to Talk Talk's "Spirit Of Eden" record, and taking notes. I think that especially the song "desire", from that record, sounds a lot like the some of score in Grand Canyon.

I could be wrong though ;)

Anyways, if you like the soundtrack to Grand Canyon, then check out "Spirit Of Eden", by Talk Talk. It's a great record :)

Did James Newton Howard also do the music that opens the movie? I wanna get that peice but the only thing I can find on iTunes it the grand theme that comes up at the end of the movie when the camera takes in the view of the might Grand Canyon.
What's the name of the opener?

reply

James Newton Howard did write the music that opens the movie. The piece over the main titles is his aptly-named composition "Main Titles." It is the first track on the soundtrack CD.

Synthetised angel voices? I didn't see it like that, but it was powerful and good.

If anyone's interested, La La Land Records has just released a limited edition of JNH's score to "Grand Canyon," and it contains over 20 minutes of music not heard on the original release. Here's the link to it:

The music in the movie is terrific.

Grand Canyon is an underrated film, much better than the similar themed Crash.

The screaming tinny guitars is so freaking late 80s. Parts of the score were interesting. But it is an interesting time capsule.

No one has mentioned Warren Zevon's contributions yet. One of the great American songwriters..
