Most of us love the movie and the book, or we would not be on this board. My question is simple. Now that things have changed in society, should this movie be remade and actually follow the book? No matter what your answer, why and why not, and please add if you loved the book or the movie more. Thank you ahead of time.

I do not think the movie should be remade. They got it right the first time. Everything was perfect. The characters, the music, the whole feel of it. No need to redo it and have it be a pro-lesbian statement, cult film. Truly good films leave much up to the imagination, which is what FGT, 1991 did. I have not read the book and don't intend to. I don't want to spoil the way I feel about this wonderful film.

The reason a group of us loyal fans of Fannie Flagg would like a redo of this movie, is for it to adhere more to the book. I would have liked the movie to show more of Ninny and Idgie as they were bonding. There is a wonderful part I remember where Cleo and Ninny had Idgie over to visit. Idgie told the story of how money would kill you, and you should stay away from it. There was a man who worked at the Kentucky mint and 700 pounds of dimes fell on him and killed him dead. (excuse me if I do not remember exactly, but this is close). The movie whitewashed Evelyn's marriage. The relationship between Idgie and Big George and family should have been dealt with more. The main gripe I keep hearing is that Buddy and Ruth never even knew each other, much less had a romance. Even if they do redo this book/movie, it should never upset your love of this one. If it does you really have a thin skin. As for not reading the book, you are missing out on a wonderful book, which is not a porn book.

It probably is good book but it sounds like it would be a long mini-series if it had all the themes you mention. I just don't trust filmmakers these days. Everything has to be so graphic, overt and-in-your face. Perhaps I will read the book. I like period piece books and movies, particularly those portraying the deep south in the 1920-30s.
I can tell you that if you don't read the book you're missing out on something truly beautiful. I love both the movie and the book, but the book contains some scenes and background stories for the movie characters that shouldn't be missed :)
I don't think it should be re-made either. The closest thing I could see to a remake would maybe be a show about Whistle Stop, but even that's a stretch.
I do think some of Fannie Flagg's other books should be made. I would love to see Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man, though I don't know how well it would translate to movie form. There was a one-woman play based on it that was touring, but it never came near me.
A mini-series would be a good idea, or even a week to week show would be nice. A nice period drama/comedy weekly series would be great, with the strong characters that Flagg created. It would be a nice change from the most of the weekly series we get now. This is how I feel today.
Oh man, I was all against the idea of a remake, because while I liked the book better than the movie, I saw the movie first, so I would not like the characters looking different. A mini-series would be so cool, though. Then they could have all the stuff about Big George's family and all the other people in Whistle Stop.
I would like a mini series that was true and faithful to the book and that allowed greater development of the minor characters.
And one that would not introduce any sentimental 'Ninny is Idge' ambiguity. Ninny should stay Ninny and Idge Idge as I have ALWAYS believed them to be.
There are so many interesting characters in the book that are so worthy of being given a greater opportunity to shine.
I would really like to know Dot Wheems a little better.
I would have loved to see a mini-series. I love the film, allthough I dislike how they made it seem Ninny and Idgie were the same person, and how the relationship between Ruth and Idgie were watered down. Still its so good I dont want to see another version. A miniseries would be nice though, for the sake of the other characters from the book.

I haven't read the book, because I have always been of the mind that if you read the book first, you don't really enjoy the movie, and vice versa. You would therefore know better than me whether a re-make more faithful to the book could be more enjoyable than is the original movie.
It's a strange thing. I am usually all for doing re-makes to put a new slant on an old movie, but when I see it I usually find I preferred the original version after all.
I loved the movie (which I have seen first) and the book.
Speaking for myself I don't need a remake of this movie. In my opinion movie-adaptions of bestselling books that really succeed are not automatically those who are the most faithful to the book. The movie should cover the book, but it should be able to stand alone in it's form - and movie is different to book. And in my opinion that movie succeeds marvellously in that. I think that most of the topics of the book are to be found in the film, they are not always directly addressed to with a wooden-hammer, but I love that. It leaves possibilies for individual thoughts and interpretations.
I wouldn't mind if someone would do his alternate movie-adaption on the book, but I doubt that anyone could do one that I would love more than the Avnet-Film.
