Something that’s always disturbed me is what I imagine to be the relationship between Frank, Ruth, and Ruth’s mother. What I mean is surely Ruth’s mother heard -- perhaps even witnessed -- the beatings, but likely didn’t intervene. I’m sure it broke her heart too, but, given the times, she probably elected not to involve herself. I wonder too how much Ruth and her mother talked about the abuse, if at all.

This is addressed in the book - Ruth's mother, on her deathbed, urges her to get out saying she knows what he is like.

I've often wondered when Ruth sent the obituary along with the bible verse from the book of Ruth to Idgie, was that sort of a clue to tell Idgie to come and get her?

Definitely. The scripture basically says "I'm one of you now; where you go, I go." It was code for come get me now.
